Avalanche Set To Challenge For The Presidents’ Trophy

  • The Colorado Avalanche are in the midst of a seven-game winning streak.
  • They are in a three-way tie with the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars for the best record in the Central Division.
  • The Avalanche’s 2023-24 Presidents’ Trophy odds have soared in March.

Amid a red-hot streak for the Colorado Avalanche, the 2023-24 Presidents’ Trophy odds have experienced a considerable shift. Currently, at BetUS, the Avalanche are +1000 to win the Presidents’ Trophy.

Just a few weeks ago in early March, the Avalanche were available at +4500 odds to win the Presidents’ Trophy for the most points in the regular season. Since then, the implied probability of the Avalanche winning the Presidents’ Trophy has jumped from 2.2% to 9.1%.

At first glance it doesn’t seem like much, but that is roughly quadruple their chances from the first week of March. The drastic shift in the Presidents’ Cup betting markets is due to a torrid pace for the Avalanche recently.

Following a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night, the team extended the win streak to seven games. On the season, Colorado has recorded 93 points with a record of 44-20-5. They’ve posted an impressive mark of 9-1-0 in their previous ten games.

Tight Race in the Central Division

Despite the Avalanche’s odds for the most points in the 2023-24 NHL regular season taking off, they don’t have sole possession of first place in the Central Division. In the ultra-competitive Central, the Avalanche are tied with the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars, who all share 93 points.

The Jets and Stars are 7-3-0 in their last ten assignments. They continue to pester the Avalanche in what is shaping up to be a thrilling finish. There are only seven teams with 93 or more points in the NHL and three of them are Central Division squads.

The three frontrunners in the Central are attempting to catch the Boston Bruins for the top record in the NHL heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Despite losing David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron to retirement this past offseason, the Bruins own the best record.

At 41-14-15 and 97 points, Boston has a four-point advantage over the Avalanche. The Florida Panthers, New York Rangers, and Vancouver Canucks are all in the mix with 94 points apiece. With +700 odds, the Panthers have the shortest odds to win the Stanley Cup.

Presidents’ Trophy Curse: Do the Avs Want the Presidents’ Trophy?

Teams who typically win the Presidents’ Trophy for the top record in the regular season don’t have success in the postseason. The 2012-13 Chicago Blackhawks are the last team to win the Stanley Cup after capturing the Presidents’ Trophy in the same year.

Since the trophy was introduced in 1985-86, only eight winners have proceeded to win the Cup at the end of the NHL Playoffs. Hockey players are some of the most superstitious players in all professional sports, so that makes it really interesting.

Is there any incentive for the Avalanche to empty the tank for a run at the best record in the NHL? Probably not, but they’d like to stay hot entering the playoffs, which begin on Monday, April 22.

Nathan MacKinnon Remains Hot at Ball Arena

Can Nathan MacKinnon record a point in every home game this season? The 28-year-old native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is on an insane stretch with a point in every matchup played in Denver at Ball Arena.

Earlier this month, we shared with you that MacKinnon leads the Hart Trophy race and is on an incredible point spread at home. Well, a few weeks later and nothing has changed: MacKinnon still hasn’t gone without scoring a point against opponents at Ball Arena.

The guy has notched 42 goals, 75 assists, and a total of 117 points for second in the NHL. Additionally, the dynamic playmaker has a +/- rating of +29. And, yes, you can bet on whether MacKinnon will finish the regular season having recorded a point in all 41 home starts.

Currently, Bovada offers +450 on that market. According to the implied probability, MacKinnon has less than 20% chance of accomplishing it. The Avalanche have nine home games remaining in their regular season schedule and 13 matchups overall.
