Clark Sets Another WNBA Record with 19 Assists in Loss to Dallas

  • Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever has been the biggest story in the WNBA during her rookie season.
  • Clark set a WNBA record with 19 assists in a 101-93 loss to Dallas on Wednesday night.
  • It was her last regular-season game before the All-Star Game, where a WNBA team will play Team USA before the Olympic break.

Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever is starting to find her feet in the WNBA. She got off to a slow start in her pro career, but the game is starting to slow down for the former Iowa star. The guard just provided 19 assists, a record for a WNBA game.

That’s after Clark’s presence has led to numerous attendance records around the league, and her league debut brought in a record amount of WNBA wagers.

After moving the needle off the court, she broke the WNBA assist on Wednesday, July 17. Despite Clark’s 19 dimes, the Fever lost 101-93 to the Dallas Wings.

Clark Shows Incredible Court Vision on Record-Setting Night

At Iowa, Clark was known as a great scorer, and her deep three-pointers made headlines all over the country. However, she was also a fantastic passer, averaging 8.2 assists over her four-year college career. While her shot hasn’t always been good this season, Clark has brought her excellent court vision with her to the WNBA.

On Wednesday, Clark set out 19 assists for her teammates in the loss to the Wings. The previous record was held by Courtney Vandersloot, who had 18 assists against Indiana when she played for Chicago in August 2020. Vandersloot, who is second to Sue Bird in WNBA all-time assists, also had 18 in a postseason game in September 2021.

Nine of Clark’s assists went to Aliyah Boston, who had 28 points and eight rebounds for the Fever. The Clark-Boston connection is the future for the Fever, and they’re definitely starting to figure out how to play together. With Boston in the post and Clark running the show on the perimeter, Indiana have gone 8-5 after starting 3-10.

Of course, there are still some issues with Clark, who had six turnovers and is the runaway leader in the league for that category. She is also still a below-average defender, but that’s an Indiana team problem. Only Dallas allows more points per game than the Fever.

The turnovers should go down with experience, and Clark still had 19 assists on the night, which is incredible. Earlier this month, Clark became the first WNBA rookie with a triple-double in a win over the New York Liberty.

Bettors are still wagering record amounts on Clark’s WNBA props. BetUS has Clark as a staggering -2000 favorite to win Rookie of the Year over Chicago’s Angel Reese. With performances like the one in Dallas on Wednesday night, Clark might be a WNBA betting lock already.

Clark, WNBA All-Stars to Face Team USA on Saturday Night Before Olympic Break

Even though she didn’t make Team USA for the Olympics, Clark will still get to see that squad first-hand. Clark and a team of stars will take on Team USA on Saturday night.

While the WNBA All-Star betting odds have Team USA favored, Clark will get a chance to show that she may have deserved a spot. The All-Star Game takes place on Saturday, July 20, at 8:30 PM Eastern time. The game will be shown on ABC.

Then, Clark gets to have a break as the league pauses for the Olympics. Indiana won’t play again until August 16 at home against Phoenix.

Clark has been going non-stop, essentially, since the beginning of her final year at Iowa. It’ll be good for her to put her feet up for a few days, as Clark is third in the league in minutes, and she now leads the WNBA in assists.
