It was an incredible weekend in the NBA ahead of the trade deadline on February 6. On Sunday morning, NBA fans on the East Coast woke up to the massive Luka Dončić-Anthony Davis trade between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Later Sunday evening, the Sacramento Kings shipped out star guard De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio, and got back Zach LaVine from Chicago, along with six draft picks.
Fox Gets His Preferred Destination, Pairing up with Victor Wembanyama
While everyone was still trying to wrap their head around the Dončić-Davis trade, Sacramento was working on a deal to move Fox. When it was complete, ESPN’s Shams Charania dropped the news.
This was not a surprise to anyone as last week, it was reported that Fox and the Kings were working on a potential trade package for the star guard after seven-plus seasons together. In the end, Fox headed to San Antonio, along with guard Jordan McLaughlin. The Kings received guard Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls, along with six draft picks (three first-round picks, three second-round picks), and former Spurs’ guard Sidy Cissoko. The Bulls got Zach Collins and Tre Jones from Chicago, Kevin Huerter from Sacramento, and they got a first-rounder that they sent to the Spurs in a previous trade.
The Bulls got involved as the Kings wanted to get a player back, and San Antonio didn’t have to give up any of a talented, young core. Of course, the key is pairing from Fox with Wembanyama, who was in Paris recently with the Spurs, but also watching his favorite team, Paris Saint-Germain, stay among the Champions League winner odds. But Wemby’s Spurs might be better positioned for the future than PSG right after this deal.
Who Got the Better of This Deal: Sacramento, San Antonio, or Chicago?
The odds at NBA betting sites for Sacramento and San Antonio didn’t really move much, but this was much more about the future. For the Bulls, they got some role players and a first-rounder for Lavine, a two-time All-Star who was having a fantastic season in Chicago.
The Kings got back an excellent player in LaVine, and six draft picks to help them out in the future. But they also showed other stars that they’ll work with a player to get him to his preferred destination. Unlike the situation around the Jimmy Butler next team odds and the Miami Heat, this situation was handled well all around.
Meanwhile, the Spurs got Fox, who on paper, fits very well with Wembanyama. Chris Paul is likely gone after this season, and the Spurs also have rookie Stephon Castle to pair with Fox in the backcourt. The one-time All-Star is averaging 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.1 assists, and was the 2023 Clutch Player of the Year.
It has been a wild start to the week leading up to the NBA trade deadline already, and we’ll keep you updated on the latest news!
