- De’Aaron Fox has spent all eight of his NBA seasons with the Sacramento Kings after being drafted fifth in the 2017 Draft.
- Fox turned down a contract extension with the Kings, who will now look to trade the star guard ahead of the trade deadline on February 6.
- San Antonio is thought to be Fox’s preferred destination, which would team him up with Victor Wembanyama.
The Sacramento Kings are 24-23, which has them in 10th in the tough NBA Western Conference. They’ve had a tumultuous season, firing head coach Mike Brown on December 27.
The roster is headed for a big shakeup as star guard De’Aaron Fox is looking to leave Sacramento, and it is reported that he wants to go to San Antonio to team up with Victor Wembanyama.
Fox Has Spent Eight Years in Sacramento, Making One All-Star Team
It was reported on January 28 that Fox and the Kings had started discussing a possible trade. This has been a story since Fox declined to sign a contract extension with the Kings last summer.
Fox has had a solid career in Sacramento, averaging 21.5 points and 6.1 since joining the team in 2017. He was the fifth pick in the NBA Draft for the Kings, but really took off in his fourth season, averaging 25.2 points ad 7.2 assists. Through 44 games this season, the former Kentucky guard is averaging 25.1 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.0 rebounds for the Kings.
However, Sacramento is mired in a battle for the play-in spots in the Western Conference. They traded for DeMar DeRozan, giving the team two players, along with Fox, who are known for coming up big in clutch situations. In fact, Fox was the 2023 NBA Clutch Player of the Year, and DeRozan finished second to Golden State’s Stephen Curry in 2024. Domantas Sabonis is also a monster season.
But it hasn’t translated to success for the Kings, who fired Mike Brown in December. Assistant coach Doug Christie took over and after a hot stretch, the Kings are coming back down to earth.
Spurs are Fox’s Preferred Team, But Will Sacramento Send Him There?
Next week, most people will be focused on Super Bowl 59 odds. But the NBA world will be looking at the trade deadline on February 6. It seems like Fox will be moved before then, and NBA betting lines show that San Antonio, Fox’s destination of choice, is favored to land the All-Star guard. That would be a formidable combination as Fox would pair up with young phenom Victor Wembanyama.
But will the Kings work with Fox to send him to a team have to battle in the Western Conference? The Spurs have the salaries to make it work, and they have draft capital the Kings could use. Houston, Miami, and Orlando are also in the mix. The Los Angeles Lakers have been suggested, but they can’t put together a package that would compete with the other teams.
While you’re setting up your Super Bowl squares for the big game next Sunday, keep an eye on the De’Aaron Fox situation. If he ends up in San Antonio, alongside Wembanyama, the landscape in the Western Conference could change drastically.
