Jets Move Up in Early 2024 Super Bowl Odds After Nathaniel Hackett Signing

  • The New York Jets have moved from +4000 to +3000 to win the Super Bowl in 2024.
  • The Jets signed former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett as their Offensive Coordinator last Thursday.
  • Hackett is believed to be the Jets’ link to possibly acquire Aaron Rodgers during the offseason.

Super Bowl LVII has yet  to take place. Nor do we know today which teams play each other fo the Lombardi Trophy on February 13th at the State Farm Arena. Still, the top NFL sportsbooks have already opened the betting odds for Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.

According to the top NFL betting sites, the Kansa City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are the +550 betting favorites to win next year’s NFL title game. The San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles, who dispute the NFC championship this Sunday, are next at +700 and +100 odds, respectively. Also listed at +1000 are the Cincinnati Bengals who will face the Chiefs for the AFC title this weekend.

The opening odds are supposed to stay where they are now until the offseason when player movements begin. But that has not been the case. The New York Jets have moved up the odds boards after hiring Nathaniel Hackett as Offensive Coordinator.

No, the Jets didn’t overtake any of the teams mentioned above. However, after opening at +4000, they are now at +3000 to win Super Bowl LVIII next year.

Jets Hire Former Broncos HC Nathaniel Hackett as OC

The Jets ended their two-week search for a new Offensive Coordinator on Thursday by hiring former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Hackett didn’t make it through his first season in Denver as he was fired one day after Christmas after posting a 4-11 SU record.

Under Hackett, the Broncos averaged just 15.5 points per game, their lowest scoring average since 1996. Prior to the season, the team acquired QB Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks and signed him to a 5-year $242 million contract. But instead of becoming contenders with Wilson as envisioned, they sank to the bottom of the ocean with Wilson sharply declining versus the previous season.

Before going to Denver, Hackett was coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 2019 to 2021. Prior to that, he was also offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2017-2018 and Buffalo Bills from 2013-2014.

Hackett was also the offensive coordinator on four teams that made the playoffs, including three with the Packers. And that statement leads us to why the Jets moved up in the way too early Super Bowl LVIII odds boards.

In his stint as offensive coordinator with various teams in the NFL, only once has Hackett coached a team that ranked in the Top 10 in the NFL in offense and that was Jacksonville in 2018 with Blake Bortles as his quarterback. So why did the Jets choose him among more than 15 applicants for the job? And why did head coach Robert Saleh call Hackett a “home run” hire? The answer may be very simple.

As stated above, Hackett was OC for three Packers’ playoff teams. During that playoff run, Aaron Rodgers won back-to-back MVP awards. In a 2020 interview, Rodgers acknowledged Hackett as a big part of his success and added that he hoped Hack would doesn’t go anywhere, unless he (Rodgers) does too. With Rodgers rumored to have played his final game with the Packers, Hackett could be the Jets’ link to Rodgers.

Saleh has openly stated that he wants a veteran quarterback this season. There is no one who would fit the bill better than Rodgers. According to BetOnline, the Jets have the second best odds to land Rodgers if he does not stay in Green Bay.

Right now, the 49ers are the +250 favorites to be his non-Packers destination next season. But given how Brock Purdy has been playing for San Francisco and the recent signing of Nathaniel Hackett as their coordinator, there’s no doubt that there’s good betting value in the Jets at +350 to land Rodgers.
