NFL Players Starting the Season with Legal Issues

  • The NFL has had legal troubles with their players throughout the league’s history, and it continues heading into the 2024 season.
  • Tyreek Hill was arrested as he was driving to Miami’s first game against Jacksonville on Sunday.
  • Cleveland’s DeShaun Watson has had another lawsuit levied against him.

NFL players have been under the microscope for years, due to many legal issues off the field, and it’s not off to a great start in 2024.

Miami’s Tyreek Hill was pulled over by police on his way to the Dolphins’ Week 1 opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, leading to a frightening confrontation.

Cleveland’s DeShaun Watson was also accused of more allegations on Monday, as he continues to be a distraction off the field.

Hill, Watson Starting the Season in Trouble

Hill was driving to the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday, when he was pulled over by police. Body-camera footage has been released, showing that the police officer involved asked Hill to put down his window, and then pulled him out of the car. Hill went on CNN to explain his side of the story.

Hill was pulled out of his car, and forced to the ground. Teammates Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith were on the scene as well, and Campbell was also briefly detained by the police. Hill managed to call Drew Brooks, the director of security for the Dolphins, and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Brooks and Rosenhaus got Hill released, and he continued on his way to the game.

The Miami Dolphins released a statement on their X account:

This seems like it’s going to be a long road until this situation is settled.

Watson has more legal issues after missing the entire 2021 season, due to several sexual-misconduct lawsuits. Watson was traded from Houston to Cleveland, and suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 season.

But Watson has been named in another sexual-misconduct civil suit, stemming from his time in Houston. Watson settled 20 of 24 lawsuits in 2022, with one remaining. He’ll have two more lawsuits to deal with after these new allegations have come to light.

Markets Predict Hill, Watson as Next to Be Detained This Season

You can find markets at online sportsbooks pertaining to NFL players being detained during the regular season in 2024. Hill and Watson are at the top of the list, along with the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Travis Kelce, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes. These are interesting names to have on this list with Hill and Watson, both of whom have had legal issues in the past.

It’s not just players, either. New England’s Robert Kraft, one of the NFL’s richest owners, was arrested in 2019 for visiting a brothel. Indianapolis’ Jim Irsay was arrested for driving while intoxicated in 2014. The NFL would do well to crack down on these problems across the league.
