Cody Simpson is known for many things. The 27-year-old Australian is a musician who has released four solo albums and has been on Broadway, playing Dmitry in the musical,“Anastasia”. Simpson also won the debut season of “The Masked Singer Australia”. He has also dated the likes of Miley Cyrus, Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid.
But Simpson grew up as a talented swimmer, trained out of Miami, Florida. He is attempting to move back into that world, as Simpson wants to represent Australia at the Paris Olympics this summer.
Simpson has one more path to Paris, and it’s in his favorite event, the 100m butterfly.
Simpson Strikes Out in the 100m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly Up Next
Simpson failed to make the cut in the 100m freestyle in the Australian swimming trials at Brisbane Aquatic Centre on Thursday, June 13. His time of 49.05 was 10th in his heat, which was won by Kyle Chalmers. However, there is no shame in losing to Chalmers, who is the world-record holder in the short-course 100m freestyle, as well as the 4×100m medley relay.
Simpson can also take solace that his 49.05 time was just 0.05 of a second short of his career best. He knew that his back was against the wall in this event, stating:
It’s a stacked field in the 100 free, so I knew it was going to be a bit iffy trying to get into the final. It’s a good warm-up for the 100 (butter) fly.
Now, it gets even tougher for Simpson, as he has to finish in the top two of the 100m butterfly to punch his ticket to Paris. He’s going to have to do some work, though. His personal best time of 51.67 is 0.5 of a second off the Australian Olympic qualifying time. The top three finishers in the 100m freestyle are all in the 100m butterfly trials as well. Simpson needs to push himself to the limit, or past it, to make the team.
But he has been successful in swimming in the past. Simpson won two gold medals as a junior swimmer in 2009. He also performed well at the 2022 Australian Short Course Championships, finishing second to Grant House of the United States in the 100m individual medley.
Simpson Has a Career He Can Fall Back On
Fortunately, if this doesn’t work out, Simpson can always go back to his previous career. He released his most recent self-titled album in 2022. Simpson was also in the film, “Smiley Face Killers” in December 2020.
Simpson also toured with Justin Bieber back in 2013, and is known in the United States for his high-profile relationships. He is currently dating Emma McKeon, a decorated Australian swimmer. She has won 11 Olympic medals, including five gold medals.
McKeon is Australia’s most decorated medalist, and she is tied with fellow swimmer Ian Thorpe for the most gold medals of any Australian athlete. It’s going to be a tough road for Simpson to make it to France. However, if nothing else, Simpson will be in Paris, cheering McKeon on in what will be her last Olympics.
