How We Select the Best Minnesota Sports Betting Sites
We have our reviewers thoroughly assess every corner of a sportsbook before recommending any betting site to Minnesotans. Part of our process involves ensuring a site is safe, secure, and mobile-compatible.
Below is the criteria we use for every review:
Availability in Minnesota
We look for highly accessible betting sites available in MN. Sites need to accept users from anywhere, whether you’re logging in at a bar in downtown Minneapolis or hiking around Leech Lake.
Minnesota Sports Coverage
We champion sites like Bovada that go beyond the Timberwolves and Vikings and offer odds on MN pro sports teams like Minnesota United FC, the Whitecaps, and the Minnesota Lynx. We also look for college sports odds covering teams like the Gophers and Tommies, as well as NCAA Division II teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Safety & Security
Sportsbooks must have dedicated player safety policies and operate anti-fraud and money laundering operations. We also check whether sites are encrypted by 256-bit SSL or TLS. Sites that fail this test go onto our blocklist.
Bonuses and Promotions
We look for value in new customer bonuses and existing player promos. MyBookie, for example, offers a great first deposit offer that matches 50% up to $1,000 and 50% sports reload deals for current customers.
Payout Experience
We test deposit and withdrawal options to ensure they work, are safe, and are fast. We focus heavily on payouts and examine how sites facilitate transactions. A site like BetOnline, for example, has 21 different withdrawal options, 16 of which are crypto. We also assess fee structures to ensure they don’t rip players off.
Customer Support
We stress-test each sportsbook’s customer support provision. This means asking questions on 24/7 live chats, phone lines, social media, via post, and email. We make sure MN sports betting sites respond quickly and correctly. After all, if a site doesn’t care about its customers, we won’t recommend it.
Is Online Sports Betting Legal in Minnesota?
While there are ways to bet online in Minnesota, sports betting generally isn’t legal. There are no sportsbooks based in the state, which means there are no regulations governing them.
Section 609.76 of the Minnesota Statutes states that no one can operate or facilitate gambling within the state. However, there’s no law preventing a player from placing a bet. Therefore, residents can use offshore sportsbooks, which offer a broader range of bets than traditional sportsbooks, including esports, politics, and entertainment.
There are a few regulated forms of betting in Minnesota. The big one is pari-mutuel horse wagering at Canterbury Park, where you can download a sportsbook app to place your bets. Minnesota also boasts 21 tribal casinos – here are the top five!
Minnesota taxes sports bets at 6%, and it is possible to pay this fee anonymously.
Minnesota Sports Betting Timeline
Minnesota is one of the few states in America not to have a regulated sports betting industry. Here’s a quick timeline of how the state has handled the issue of sports betting over the decades.
May 2024 — Meanwhile, Rep. Zack Stephenson again tries to push through a sports betting bill. HF2000 offers to “authorize and regulate wagering on certain athletic and electronic sports events, and appropriate money for it.” The bill would have taxed revenues at 20% but it fails to pass before the legislative session closes.
May 2023 — Sports betting bill SF 1949 proposes 11 sports betting licenses to tribes, valid for 20 years. The bill would have taxed Gross Gaming Revenue at 10% but failed to make it through the legislature.
May 2022 — A bill to legalize mobile sports betting (HF 778) makes progress in the state legislature. Rep. Zack Stephenson sees it through various committees to eventually land in the Senate. The session ends with no vote as Senators disagree over retail sports betting at racetracks.
May 2018 — The Supreme Court strikes down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, meaning Minnesota can choose whether to regulate its sports betting industry. State legislators choose not to do so.
March 2008 — Running Aces Casino and Racetrack opens a harness horse track and begins accepting simulcast wagering.
2004 — Melanie Benjamin, chief executive of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, sends a letter to Gov. Pawlenty proposing tribal-state discussions around sharing casino revenues and challenging the federal ban on sports betting to allow tribes to operate sportsbooks on their land.
October 1992 — The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act prohibits states from regulating sports betting in any form.
June 1985 — Canterbury Park opens its thoroughbred racetrack with simulcast racing.
