The eighth and final group in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar is Group H with favorites Portugal, Uruguay, South Korea, and Ghana. This is a very balanced group in this tourney with one team from four different confederations (UEFA, CONMEBOL, AFC, CAF).
The 2022 FIFA World Cup will kick off on Monday, November 21 (Sunday November 20 in Qatar) with Ecuador facing hosts Qatar in Match 1 at Al Bayt Stadium (Grass) in Al Khor.
The latest FIFA Men’s Rankings see Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) and Portugal ranked #9, Uruguay at #14, underappreciated South Korea at #28, with Ghana at #61. Uruguay made it to the Round of 16 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Besides living legend and Captain Ronaldo, Head Coach Fernando Santos and UEFA’s Portugal have Vice Captain Pepe (Porto), João Félix (Atlético Madrid), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), and Danilo Pereira (PSG).

GK Rui Patrício (AS Roma) and Portugal are used to advancing far in the World Cup of late, and this Group H is hardly a Group of Death, but more like a Group of Breath in the Group Stage for A Seleção who should move on along with Uruguay from this quartet?
But will favorites Portugal win Group H?
With guys like André Silva (RB Leipzig) and a 5-1-2 record this calendar year, we may just see CR7 and Portugal again playing in the Round of 16. But here’s the rub. Who was it that beat Portugal in the 2018 World Cup in Russia in the Round of 16? Yep, Uruguay.
Portugal has lost to Spain and Switzerland but also tied La Roja (1-1) and beat the Swiss (4-0), so this team can rise to the occasion on the world stage and always plays good defense. No one has scored 2 goals yet against Portugal in 2022. That’s right, nil.
Portugal opens up Group H play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Ghana in Match 15 at Stadium 974 (Grass) in Doha (19:00). Oddsmakers have favorites Portugal at -230, Ghana priced at +650 with a Draw (tie) lined at +310.
The two teams have met one time, in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the Group Stage with Portugal emerging victorious, 2-1. Take Portugal again here and lay the -230 odds. Scoring will be hard for Ghana but A Seleção have Ronaldo, the Silvas, Félix and should tally twice.
In its second Group Stage game in Group H, Portugal will face Uruguay on Monday, November 28 (22:00) in the biggest game (Match 32) in the group. It takes place at Lusail Iconic Stadium (Grass) in Lusail and the winner (if there is one) should win this Group H.
Portugal will play South Korea in the final match for both Group H teams on December 2 (Match 46) at 18:00 at Education City Stadium (Grass) in Al Rayyan. If Portugal has already clinched a spot in the Knockout Stage by this one, look for a conservative effort.

Uruguay always seems to fly under the radar for many reasons, but the truth is this country always has a pretty good Soccer team. This South American nation and CONMEBOL confederation member also hosted and won the first FIFA World Cup in 1930.
In the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Uruguay met the same cruel fate as many other good teams (Belgium, Croatia), and were eliminated by the eventual champions, France.
Captain Diego Godin (159 caps) and La Celeste are 7-1-1 (W-D-L) this year, only falling to Iran (0-1) and drawing with the USA (0-0). Of note for gamblers, Uruguay has allowed only 2 goals all year—one to Venezuela and one to Iran—and have registered 7 Clean Sheets.
The starting GK for Uruguay will be Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray, 133 Caps) and with veteran Defender Godin (Vélez Sarsfield) and José Giménez (Atlético Madrid), scoring on this team will be just as hard this time around as it has proven to be in recent years.
Ageless club icons Luis Suárez (Nacional) and Edison Cavani (Valencia) give this team a nice edge and expect this to be the last World Cup for these two scorers. Suárez and Cavani are both now 25 years old.
Group H play for Uruguay starts with Match 14 against South Korea at Education City Stadium (Grass) in Al Rayyan on Friday, November 24. Oddsmakers have Uruguay as -140 favorites in that game with South Korea at +370 and a Draw currently priced at +230.
This will be the eight meeting between Uruguay and South Korea. In Match 32 on November 28, Uruguay will get its stiffest test against group favorites Portugal, but remember that the South American side eliminated the European side back in 2018.
Uruguay will close against Ghana on December 3 in Match 45 in what looks like a good betting spot to back Uruguay, whether it needs the game or not. Likely the points here (and maybe the Goals) will matterin who ends up winning this 2022 FIFA Group H.

- Last Appearance: 2018

Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur) and South Korea scored 3 goals in 3 games in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and failed to advance to the Round of 16 from its group. And this tournament may be just as hard with Portugal and Uruguay both in this group.
The Tigers of Asia will be pressed to score and may be fortunate Ghana is also in this group as that looks like the best chance for a Win and 3 points. South Korea Head Coach Paolo Bento will look to leader Son Heung-min and Hwang Ui-jo (Olympiacos) for goals.
This will be the 10th straight World Cup appearance for South Korea. Only Brazil (22), Germany (18), Argentina (13), and Spain (12) have had more than the Taegeuk Warriors.
No one has played more games than South Korea and this team is 11-2-3 (W-D-L) with losses to the UAE (0-1), Brazil (1-3) and Japan (0-3). The Tigers of Asia and GL Kim Seung-gyu (Al-Shabab) have registered an impressive 9 Clean Sheets over that span.
In its opener, South Korea will play Uruguay in Al Rayyan in a hard hello to Qatar. A Draw and a point might be the best result the AFC underdogs could ask for, but expect a 1-0 or 2-0 Uruguay win and a game that looks like it will go Under the betting Total.
South Korea will meet Ghana on Monday, November 28 in Al Rayyan again in a winnable game for the Tigers of Asia. Both South Korea and Ghana may head into that game needing a Win after a possible Loss in their openers to Uruguay and Portugal respectively.
The final Group H game for South Korea may be the most important yet the hardest, with CR7 and Group H favorites Portugal the opponent in Al Rayyan in what actually may be a game the Portuguese need depending on what happens against Uruguay (and Ghana).

AFC team Ghana has the lowest FIFA ranking of all teams in the tournament and going up against two teams like Portugal and Uruguay who just don’t allow that many goals spells trouble for Head Coach Otto Addo, Captain André Ayew (Al Sadd) and the Black Stars.
The most capped players for Ghana include Ayew (107 Caps, 23 Goals), D Jonathan Mensah (Columbus Crew, 69 Caps), Mubarak Wakaso (Eupen, 70 Caps), Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace, 82 Caps, 20 Goals), and GK Richard Ofori (Orlando Pirates, 24 Caps).
Ghana has gone a less than impressive 2-4-6 in 2022 in international play with the Black Stars only Wins coming against lightweights Madagascar (3-0) and Nicaragua (1-0). This may be the least impressive team in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and are fade worthy.
The first chance to bet against Ghana in Group H Group Stage play will come on November 24 against Portugal in that aforementioned opener we already discussed. Ghana will also be playing Switzerland in a Friendly on November 17 if interested.
The second Group H fixture for the Ayews, Mensah and Ghana is against South Korea on November 28 in what may be the team’s lone chance to pick up a point or three in Qatar. The closer against Uruguay will be like Fear And Loathing In Al Wakrah for poor Ghana.
Bet early and bet often and even if Uruguay has clinched a berth in the Round of 16, the CONMEBOL side should dominate the CAF one. Laying a goal on the Goal Line might not be a bad idea when that game comes in this haves and have-nots World Cup Group H.

World Cup Group H Predictions
It seems like there won’t be many surprises or upsets in 2022 FIFA World Cup Group H, especially compared to the other seven groups in this 64-game tournament where at least 31 teams will lose a game one way or another in Qatar. Even the champs may lose a game.
For me, the confidence Uruguay gained by eliminating Portugal in the Round of 16 in 2018 will be enough to make them think this group is theirs to lose.
Uruguay is a lot like Dennis Rodman or Led Zeppelin—always living in the shadows of being perceived third best. For the NBA’s Worm, it was to Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. For Led Zeppelin, it was The Beatles and The Rolling Stones stealing the spotlight.
Uruguay has a wonderful blend of old and young. They also have a talented defense and offense that can score goals while limiting opponents to few quality shots. This is a recipe for success in the Beautiful Game of Soccer. Just ask Kylian Mbappé and defending champions France.
And if you can’t score, you can’t win. Uruguay will win this group even if it ties with CR7 and Portugal in that centerpiece Group H fixture and march on to the Round of 16 again to make some other team’s lives hell in Qatar. There are no easy outs and Uruguay never is.
