Key Info about Hockey Day in Canada
Hockey Day in Canada (Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, for branding purposes) started in 2000 as a nationwide commemoration of the game, and there are games on all day long! Since there is an odd number of Canadian teams, usually a team close to Canada rounds out the Hockey Day in Canada schedule. In 2025, it’s the Boston Bruins.
This year’s edition takes place on Saturday, January 18, 2025. While teams play in their respective arenas around the country, there is an all-day telecast of the celebrations from Canmore, Alberta, which is about an hour west of Calgary. There is typically an alumni game featuring former players, both men and women, a ball hockey game for fans, and other events to celebrate Hockey Day in Canada.
Hockey Day in Canada Schedule
GAME | LOCATION | TIME |
---|---|---|
Boston Bruins vs. Ottawa Senators | Canadian Tire Center, Ottawa, Ontario | 3:00 PM ET |
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens | Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec | 7:00 PM ET |
Calgary Flames vs. Winnipeg Jets | Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba | 7:00 PM ET |
Edmonton Oilers vs. Vancouver Canucks | Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia | 10:00 PM ET |
Boston Bruins @ Ottawa Senators – 3:00 PM ET
The Bruins make the trip to Canada’s capital of Ottawa to take on the Senators. Ottawa are right on the Bruins’ heels in the Eastern Conference, so this is a surprisingly big game for both teams! The Sens haven’t been to the postseason since 2017, but they’re on the right track after years of mediocrity. Tim Stutzle leads the team in points with 43, while Drake Batherson has 39. Captain Brady Tkachuk has 38 points, and continues to add grit and toughness. They’re also getting great goaltending, notably from former Bruin Linus Ullmark, who is 12-7-2 with a 2.38 GAA.

Boston isn’t the juggernaut they once were, but they’re still a dangerous team. They fired Jim Montgomery in November after a slow start, and they just can’t find any consistency. David Pastrnak leads the way with 48 points, while captain Brad Marchand is next with 35. Then, there’s a big drop-off to Pavel Zacha at 24 points. Big-name signing Elias Lindholm hasn’t been good with just 22 points, and the Bruins need much more from him. Boston also let Ullmark go and gave the #1 job to Jeremy Swayman after a contract dispute, and he is 15-15-3 with a GAA of 2.89.
Special teams has been terrible for the Bruins, who are 30th on the power play, and 25th in penalty killing. The Sens, who won 3-2 in overtime on November 9, will look to take advantage of that and kick off a big Hockey Day in Canada with a win at NHL betting sites!
Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens – 7 PM ET
The Maple Leafs head to Montreal to take on the Canadians, who have won seven of their last 10, while Toronto has dropped three in a row. The Leafs are a much tougher team under coach Craig Berube, but their offense has taken a hit as they’re 13th in goals per game after finishing second in the 2023-24 regular season. Captain Auston Matthews has been in and out of the lineup, but Mitch Marner (60 points), William Nylander (44 points), and John Tavares (42 points) have picked up the slack. Tavares is now on injured reserve, though.

The Canadiens are right behind Toronto in goals per game at 3.00 (Toronto is at 3.02), and Cole Caufield could be en route to a career season! The 24-year-old right-winger has 24 goals and 42 points through Montreal’s first 43 games. But the Canadiens are 26th in goals allowed per game, and this could be a game for the Toronto attack to get back on track!
The two teams have split a pair of head-to-head meetings this season, with the home team winning both times. But I’ll take Toronto on the road at offshore sportsbooks to buck that trend!
Calgary Flames @ Winnipeg Jets – 7 PM ET
The Jets lead the Western Conference with 63 points as they prepare to host the Flames, who are eighth in the conference. Winnipeg is having a great season at both ends of the ice, ranking third in goals per game, and second in goals allowed per game. Kyle Connor leads a balanced attack with 59 points, and they have nine players with 25 points or more. Two-time Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck leads the NHL with a 2.00 goals against average.

The Flames sit eighth in the West, and their biggest issues are scoring goals, and stopping the opposing power play. Calgary is 27th in the league in goals, led by Jonathan Huberdeau’s 18. They’re also 29th against the power play, and that’s going to be a problem against Winnipeg. The Jets have the league’s best attack with the man advantage.
Winnipeg also has a sparkling 10-3 record on Hockey Day in Canada, and they’re 17-4-3 at home this season. I’ll put them in my Hockey Day in Canada predictions at online sportsbooks!
Edmonton Oilers @ Vancouver Canucks – 10 PM ET
The day wraps up with the Oilers heading to Vancouver, and Edmonton is third in the Western Conference. The Oilers are still wildly talented in attack, ranking seventh in goals scored and eighth on the power play. Leon Draisaitl (65 points) and Connor McDavid (62) lead the way, and there is a drop-off to defenseman Evan Bouchard (33 points). But the dynamic duo in the top four of all NHL scorers, and near the top of the NHL MVP odds, so Edmonton can get away with that. The Oilers are also seventh in goals against, and lead the way in the Stanley Cup odds.
Pickard turned 31 shots aside, McDavid recorded two goals & an assist to move into sole possession of second for all-time points by an Oiler while Podkolzin posted the GWG! After last season, where the Canucks got to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and pushed Edmonton to seven games, they have taken a big step back. The Canucks are ninth in the West, and are 3-4-3 in their last 10. They’re 22nd in goals scored and goals against, so Vancouver has a ton of work to do. Defenseman Quinn Hughes paces the Canucks with 38 assists and 47 points.
The Canucks are also better on the road than they are at home. Even though the Oilers are in a stretch of four games in five days, they’ve also won seven of their last eight. I’m riding the hot hand and taking Edmonton in my 2025 Hockey Day in Canada predictions!
