The Most Popular NFL Teams in Canada

The Most Popular NFL Teams in Canada

Let’s figure out who the most popular NFL teams in Canada are! The NFL is still more popular than the Canadian Football League north of the border, and there are five teams that stand out from the rest.

It should be noted that these teams are listed in alphabetical order.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are extremely popular in Canada, especially in Ontario. Buffalo is a two-hour drive from Toronto, and you can find bus rides from Toronto to Buffalo that includes the ride, tickets, and a tailgate party! There was also the Bills Toronto Series, in which Buffalo played eight games at Rogers Centre in Toronto from 2008 to 2013.

The Bills also signed receiver Josh Palmer, formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers. Palmer grew up in Brampton, which is a suburb of Toronto. That could earn them a few more Canadian fans. But Buffalo would have been on this list of the most popular NFL teams in Canada, anyway. The Bills are also popular on the east coast of Canada, where you could always find a Bills’ game on Sundays before the NFL took over cable and streaming services.

It also helps that the Bills were excellent in the 1990s, making it to four straight Super Bowls, despite losing all of them. The Bills are good again with quarterback Josh Allen, the reigning NFL MVP. “Bills Mafia” has a strong shout to be named the most popular team in the NFL!

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are Buffalo’s most difficult obstacle in the AFC, having been eliminated by Kansas City in four of the last five seasons. But Kansas City has also earned a spot on this list of the most popular NFL teams in Canada!

Many of the Chiefs’ fans in Canada have come recently because who doesn’t love supporting a winner? They’re particularly popular with young fans just getting into football, and Patrick Mahomes is probably the best quarterback they’ve ever seen.  You can also count on Taylor Swift bringing a new generation of fans to the Chiefs since she started dating tight end Travis Kelce. There are plenty of Swifties north of the border!

The Chiefs are also very popular in Quebec, which is the home province of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. The Chiefs drafted the guard in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and he played 60 games over five seasons in Kansas City. Duvernay-Tardif, who graduated from medical school in Quebec, opted out of the 2020 season to help out with the global pandemic.

He was then traded to the New York Jets when he returned, but Duvernay-Tardif retired in 2023. However, he still holds a special place in the hearts of Chiefs’ fans, which have made Kansas City one of the most popular NFL teams in Canada!

Minnesota Vikings

You could possibly include one of the “bigger” teams in the NFL here, such as the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and Pittsburgh Steelers. These teams have massive fan bases not just in the United States, but also north of the border! However, the Minnesota Vikings takes a spot in our list of most popular NFL teams in Canada!

The Vikings are popular in the two Prairie provinces, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. This makes sense, considering that Minnesota shares a border with Manitoba, and Saskatchewan is the next province to the west. CFL football is very popular in these two places as well, but you’ll find Vikings’ gear alongside that of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders!

Minnesota has also had a few Canadian players line up for them, such as Calgary-born receiver Nate Burleson and Halifax-born kicker Eddie Murray. Both made our list of the top 10 Canadian players of all time. Minnesota is very similar to the Prairies in terms of weather and topography, which is potentially another reason why the Vikings are well-liked in that part of the country. Currently, they have exciting players such as receiver Justin Jefferson, who is helping to usher in a new generation of Canadian fans yelling “SKOL” at their TVs!m

New England Patriots

The Patriots’ popularity up north is a combination of the reasons for Buffalo and Kansas City. New England is close enough to Canada that they would be on regional television a lot east of Toronto in the 1980s. The Patriots were also relatively good in the ‘80s, although they got hammered by Chicago in the 1985 Super Bowl.

Then, of course, the Patriots got Tom Brady and turned into a dynasty, winning six Super Bowls from 2001 to 2018. Again, everyone loves supporting a winner, and the Patriots’ fans who were there before the Super Bowls were finally rewarded.

The Patriots are in a tough spot right now, but after drafting quarterback Drake Maye, things seem to be looking up for New England at NFL betting sites. There will be a new generation of Patriots’ fans hoping that Maye can be their Brady, so the Patriots won’t be giving up this spot on the list of most popular NFL teams in Canada.2

Seattle Seahawks

We’re moving out to the West Coast for the Seahawks, who are especially popular in British Columbia. Again, proximity has a lot to do with it. Much like the east coast would get Bills or Patriots’ games on television, the west coast would get the Seahawks. Seattle is also a three-drive from Vancouver, so people could actually go to games. You can also find bus rides from Vancouver to Seattle, much like the Bills and Toronto fans.

Then, the Seahawks gained even more Canadian fans when they walloped Denver in the 2013 Super Bowl, but lost to New England in the 2014 Super Bowl, thanks to a terrible play call by head coach Pete Carroll to end the game.

During that time, the Seahawks had Luke Willson, the LaSalle, Ontario native who was drafted in the fifth round by Seattle in the 2013 draft. The tight end played a big role early in his career for the Seahawks, playing 72 games over five seasons. Willson then returned to Seattle for a year after leaving for Detroit, and was welcomed with open arms by the fans.

You’ll find some San Francisco and Raiders’ fans in Canada, but if you’re looking towards the West Coast, Seattle has to be the most popular NFL team in that part of Canada!

I selected the most popular NFL teams in Canada based on an aggregation of online research, for which I’ve included the links below if you would like to come up with a list of your own.
