  • Last Appearance: 2018

Head Coach Luis Enrique and Spain don’t have the loaded squad like past seasons with players like David Villa, Fernando Torres, Xavi and Andrés Iniesta. But there is still enough pride, defense, scoring and intent to at least try to make it to the Round of 8.

With GK Unai Simón (Athletic Bilbao), Captain Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Vice Captain Jordi Alba (Barcelona), César Azpilicueta (Chelsea), and Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), La Roja are solid and experienced in the back, as always, and shouldn’t allow may goals.

But scoring them, by Tiki Taka or whatever type buildup. seems harder in past incarnations of this Spanish team. The big guns are Álvaro Morata (Atlético Madrid), Ferran Torres (Barcelona), Gavi (Barcelona), Ansu Fati (Barcelona) and youngster Pedri (Barcelona).

Fifa Spain

Spain scored 7 goals in 4 games in the last World Cup but 5 of them came in Group B Draws against Iberian rivals Portugal (ESP 3 POR 3) and Morocco (ESP 2 MOR 2). Spain will make the Knockout Stage again in 2022 but will quickly be knocked out again.

In 2022 so far, La Furia Roja has a 5-2-1 (W-D-L) record and outscored opponents 15-5 with Spain’s only Loss coming at the feet of Switzerland (1-2). The biggest match in the group will come on November 27 when Spain and Germany meet in Al Khor (Match 28).

Germany +110

  • Confederation: UEFA
  • Pot: 2
  • Method of Qualification: UEFA Group J winners
  • World Cup Appearances: 20
  • Last Appearance: 2018
  • Best Performance: Winners (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014)
  • FIFA Ranking: #11
  • FIFA Code: GER
  • Odds to Qualify Round of 16: -900
  • Odds to Win World Cup: 11/1

Like Spain, FIFA #11 ranked Germany and GK Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) aren’t as strong as in past years. But despite being a younger team, Germany could win its 5th World Cup if everything goes right. Playing in Group E is a good start and Germany can win this group.

Why? Veteran guys like Neuer and Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich) have been there before and there are scorers on the DFB Eleven Roster with Leroy Sané (Bayern Munich), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig), Kai Havertz (Chelsea) and Mario Götze (Eintracht Frankfurt).

Fifa Germany

Lifetime in FIFA World Cup games against Spain, Germany are 2-1-1. The last time they met here was in 2010 when Spain won 2-1 in the Semifinals. The odds for that Match 28 game are already up at BetOnline and see Spain +165, Germany +178, and a Draw +236.

In Germany’s opener on Wednesday, November 23, they are a big -223 favorite over Japan (+635) in the 3-way market with a Draw at +377. The Total is 2½, 3O -114. Lifetime, Japan and Germany have played twice, the latest being a 2-2 Draw in a Friendly match.

Germany

Japan 14/1

  • Confederation: AFC
  • Pot: 3
  • Method of Qualification: AFC Third Round Group B runners up
  • World Cup Appearances: 7
  • Last Appearance: 2018
  • Best Performance: Round of 16 (2002, 2010, 2018)
  • FIFA Ranking: #24
  • FIFA Code: JPN
  • Odds to Qualify Round of 16: +325
  • Odds to Win World Cup: 300/1

Japan made the Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and are always among the better teams in the AFC confederation. But making the Round of 16 this time around in Qatar seems like it would be quite an accomplishment for the Samurai Blue.

With GK Eiji Kawashima (Strasbourg, 95 caps). MF Takumi Minamino (PSG), and Forward Takuma Asano (VfL Bochum), Japan and Head Coach Hajime Moriyasu come in strong but the draw into Group E wasn’t as kind as last time around.

Besides Australia (400/1 to win 2022 FIFA World Cup, BetOnline) and Saudi Arabia (750/1), Japan (300/1) is the only team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to have made it to the Finals of a FIFA Men’s competition on the highest Senior level.

Fifa Japan

In the opener on Wednesday, November 23, Japan will face Germany in Match 11 at Khalifa International Stadium (Grass) in Al Rayyan. Oddsmakers have Germany prohibitive -310 favorites with Japan at +700 and a Draw at +380 (11 am ET/8 am PT).

In 2022, the Japan national team has gone 8-3-2, losing only to Brazil (0-1) and Tunisia (0-3). The defense-minded Blue Samurai have registered 8 Clean Sheets (shutouts) and haven’t allowed a goal in their last 6 games (4-2-0, 11 GF-0 GA).

Opponents will have great trouble scoring on Japan and creating quality shots on target. But the always undersized Japanese side will probably have even more trouble putting the ball in the net, especially in a group with heavies Germany and Spain. Think Japan Unders.

Costa Rica 50/1

  • Confederation: CONCACAF
  • Pot: 4
  • Method of Qualification: CONCACAF vs OFC Playoff winners
  • World Cup Appearances: 6
  • Last Appearance: 2018
  • Best Performance: Quarterfinals (2014)
  • FIFA Ranking: #31
  • FIFA Code: CRC
  • Odds to Qualify Round of 16: +1000
  • Odds to Win World Cup: 400/1

Oft-underappreciated CONCACAF team Costa Rica also can’t love this draw that sees Los Ticos in the same group as Germany, Japan, and Spain. Winning a game will be hard here for Costa Rica in Qatar and if they score 3 total goals it may be a story.

There will be no Knockout Round for Los Ticos, only getting knocked out in the Group Stage and then probably returning four years later to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA and meeting the same milktoast fútbol fate. Yawn.

The Head Coach for Costa Rica is Luis Fernando Suárez and Los Ticos have gone 9-2-1 (W-D-L) this 2022 calendar year El Tricolor’s only loss coming to Panama (0-2). Costa Rica has beaten the USA (2-2), Canada (1-0), Nigeria (2-0), and tied with México over that span.

Fifa Costa Rica

The Captain of Costa Rica is Bryan Ruiz (Alajuelense, 146 caps, 29 goals ) and Los Ticos are led by talented GK Keylor Navas (PSG, 107 caps), Ruiz’s club teammate MF Celso Borges (155 caps 27 goals), and Forward Joel Campbell (León, 119 Caps, 25 goals).

In Match 10 and the opener in Group E For Costa Rica, the group favorites Spain will await. Oddsmakers currently have La Roja as huge -390 favorites with underdogs Costa Rica at +950 (Draw +400) for the match at Al-Thumama Stadium (Grass) in Doha on Wednesday, November 23.

Can this team score enough, or any goals against the likes of defensive heavyweights Spain, Germany, and Japan? Probably not and winning a game in this world cup even seems like a challenge for Costa Rica.
WC Group E Predictions Match 10 Pick: Spain -2 -115 over Costa Rica.

World Cup Group E Predictions

The 1st and 2nd place teams from 2022 FIFA World Cup Group E will most likely be Spain and Germany unless Japan can somehow sneak on into the Round of 16 like it did in Russia. It is hard to put too much hope into Costa Rica in this World Cup.

But how far can Germany and Spain go in the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar?

It seems that Brazil, Argentina, defending champions France, Belgium, Netherlands, England, Croatia, and maybe even Denmark are all a little bit stronger than these two Group E European titans.

Two teams from Group E making the 2022 FIFA World Cup Round of 8 isn’t out of the question though.

Unfortunately, the group will have the grim reality of having to play the 1st and 2nd place teams from Group F—likely Belgium and Croatia—so it won’t come easy moving on here.
