Boston Marathon 2025 Predictions: Who Will Win This Year?

Boston Marathon 2025 Predictions: Who Will Win This Year?

Most of the field for the 129th running of the oldest marathon is clear, so it’s time for my 2025 Boston Marathon predictions! The betting odds are not up yet, but they usually appear on the day before the event.

In 2024, many of the world’s top marathon runners skipped Boston to prepare for the Paris Olympics. However, with no Olympics this year, we should see the best of the best racing through the streets of Boston.

Below, check out the main favorites and my 2025 Boston Marathon predictions on Patriots’ Day in Beantown.

Boston Marathon 2025 Betting Odds

We’ll have to wait a bit for the odds, but they’ll be here a day or two before the race! Bovada covered both the men’s and the women’s events in the last few years, so I expect them to do the same in 2025. Keep an eye on Bovada, or here, for up-to-date 2025 Boston Marathon odds.

Boston Marathon 2025 Route

The Boston Marathon route covers 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to downtown Boston on Boylston Street.

Although the course does not involve many sharp turns, the change in elevation and hills make this a particularly challenging event.

Communities On The Boston Marathon Route:

  • Hopkinton
  • Ashland
  • Framingham
  • Natick
  • Wellesley
  • Newton
  • Brighton
  • Brookline
  • Boston

The marathon starts at 450 feet and drops to roughly sea level at the finish line. The opening mile features an incredibly steep decrease in elevation of 130 feet!

If runners are not prepared to traverse these challenging hills, they will fall behind. After some relief, the hilly terrain returns around Mile 8. This point of the race to the halfway mark begins to test runners physically and mentally, but the real challenge arrives following the Wellesley Scream Tunnel.

With fatigue arriving at Mile 20 and Mile 21, runners must traverse a steep half-mile hill, commonly known as the Heartbreak Hill. Winners and losers are made in this portion of the Boston Marathon. After that, it’s a straight downhill east toward downtown Boston.

The large Citgo sign marks the final stretch to the finish line at roughly the 25-mile mark. After entering Beacon Street, runners are nearly home on Boylston Street.

Boston Marathon 2025 Top Favorites

The 2024 edition saw Evans Chebet of Kenya fall short of his quest for a three-peat. Chebet finished third, just behind Mohamed Esa of Kenya. Esa’s countryman, Sisay Lemma, won his second World Marathon Major as he also won the 2021 London Marathon. Lemma finished with a time of 2:06:17, while Esa was behind him at 2:06:58.

On the women’s side, it was a podium domination for the Kenyans! Hellen Obiri won her second straight Boston Marathon with a time of 2:22:37. Obiri was just ahead of Sharon Lokedi, who finished with a time of 2:22:45, while Edna Kiplagat was third with a time of 2:23:21.

Obiri has now won three World Marathon Majors, including the Boston Marathon in 2023 and the New York City Marathon in 2023. The Kenyan also finished with the bronze medal at Paris 2024.

Professional Men’s Field Favorites

Find the top runners from the men’s Boston Marathon 2025 elite field below:

Sisay Lemma (Ethiopia)

Lemma’s win in Boston in 2024 was touted as one of our favorites last year, despite not having a great record in this marathon. He had two straight DNFs (Did Not Finish), and finished 30th in 2023. But Lemma got out to a great start in 2024 and held off the field to win his second WMM.

The Ethiopian could look to adapt the same strategy in 2025, but the rest of the field will be on to him. It might be best if Lemma leave a little more in the tank to get through the punishing final section of the race. Either way, he has the potential to again beat the field in Boston.

Evans Chebet (Kenya)

Chebet, like the rest of the field, was caught off guard by Lemma’s quick start. But the Kenyan will be better prepared in 2025, and he’s looking for his third straight podium finish in Boston. For my money, I think he should be the favorite when the Boston Marathon odds are released at online sportsbooks.

The 36-year-old has fallen to 40th in the world men’s marathon rankings, 37 spots lower than Lemma. However, I believe Chebet will rise up the rankings with a great performance in Boston, a race he knows as well, or better, than anyone in the field!

John Korir (Kenya)

Korir finished fourth in Boston in 2024, and won his first WMM in the Chicago Marathon last fall. He’s ready to take the next step and join his brother Wesley, who won the Boston Marathon in 2012.

The 28-year-old has as much straight-line speed as anyone in the field, but he’ll have to manage his gas tank so he can show that speed off over the last part of the race. If Korir is within distance of the leaders, he could absolutely make a blazing run for the finish line in Boston on Monday!

Professional Women’s Field Favorites

Hellen Obiri (Kenya)

You have to start the Boston Marathon conversation with Obiri, who got hurt after winning here last year. But she still managed to pick up the bronze medal in Paris, and finished second to countrywoman Sheila Chepkirui in the New York Marathon.

Obiri’s as good as anyone when it comes to closing a race, especially in Boston, which should make her the favorite in the Boston Marathon odds. The 35-year-old is seventh in the women’s marathon rankings, but Obiri is surely ramping up to go for a three-peat in Beantown!

Sharon Lokedi (Kenya)

Lokedi finished eight seconds behind Obiri as she was looking to add to her win at the 2022 New York Marathon, her first time racing through the streets of the Big Apple! The 31-year-old finished ninth in New York in November 2024. She currently ranks 16th in the women’s marathon rankings.

It should be noted that Lokedi was making her Boston Marathon debut last year, so she’s proven to be a quick study in these World Major Marathons, at least in North America. Lokedi also finished fourth at the Olympics, with a personal best of 2:23:14. She would love to get one over on her countrywoman and the rest of the competition in Boston!

Des Linden (United States)

Linden might be the best chance for an American to win in Boston, on the men’s or the women’s side. She won here in 2018, finished second in 2011, and the California native also finished second in the 2010 Chicago Marathon.

Linden finished 16th in Boston last year, 18th in 2023, and 13th in 2022. This is her 12th time taking part in the Boston Marathon, so she knows the route well. She’s currently 312th in the rankings, which means you might be able to get a solid return on her Boston Marathon odds. With her pedigree at this race, Linden could be in for a big upset on Patriots’ Day!

Boston Marathon Betting Tips

There are some helpful tips you can use to gain an edge for betting on the Boston Marathon 2025. Let’s go over some of the best advice before placing your bets:

Check The Weather Forecast:

Some runners thrive in poor weather, while others prefer to run in the dry without a drop of rain. For some competitors, it doesn’t matter, they are terrific performers in any conditions.

Also, oddsmakers will often release Boston Marathon prop bets on the over/under for the quickest time. Rain and wind would impact this wager considerably.

Focus On The Favorites

The Boston Marathon attracts a wide range of different skill levels. All runners either qualified or were invited to run, but there is a difference between the amateurs and professionals.

Runners in the elite fields are here to win. This isn’t a recreational event. You can find them by looking at the favorites in the Boston Marathon 2024 odds at Bovada.

Recent Form

Before locking in your bets, ensure that you look at how well runners are performing lately. Are they mentally and physically fit for the challenge that is ahead of them in Boston?

Also, make sure you investigate any news regarding recent injuries or personal complications.

Investigate Personal Bests

While personal bests in marathons don’t always automatically equate to a winner, it’s valuable information to know who the fastest runners are in the field!

Moreover, check the personal best times for runners you are considering betting on from over the last year.

Historical Data Is Your Friend:

Building on our previous Boston Marathon tip, it is crucial to examine the historical data of this race. There are runners, like Chebet, who have solved the hills of the Boston Marathon.

Conversely, other long-distance runners have had their worst performances on this course. Also, consider betting on runners who’ve had success on other courses with drastic elevation changes.

Boston Marathon By The Numbers

For a final look at our Boston Marathon betting preview, let’s dissect key numbers and information for the big day on Monday, April 21:

2025 Boston Marathon Predictions

For my men’s Boston Marathon prediction, I have to take Evans Chebet. With two wins and a third-place finish in the past three years, the results speak for themselves. Depending on the Boston Marathon odds, I would also take a look at Korir, but I’m going with Chebet in my betting picks.

The Bet
EVANS CHEBET

On the women’s side, let’s take Sharon Lokedi. Chebet showed how tough it is to win this race three years in a row. While I think Obiri will put up a good fight, Lokedi learned some lessons from last year and will be better on Monday. I’m putting Sharon Lokedi in my Boston Marathon predictions!
