O’Brien may not be thrilled with City Of Troy’s latest performance, but he has to be happy with where Los Angeles is heading. For his second entry in the Derby, the trainer is calling on Los Angeles to enter the starting gates on the turf.
Los Angeles is a winner in three of three starts, as he seeks to build on the momentum from his win in the 2024 Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial Stakes (Gr. 3). It was a confident performance for Los Angeles after he upset the field in his first two races as a two-year-old.
The horse won his debut event in the 2023 Camas Park Stud Irish and then ensured it wasn’t a fluke with a victory in his stakes debut. The Irish-bred colt beat the field as a longshot in the 2023 Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr. 1).
Finally, online bookies and bettors smartened up, and he received more support as one of the favorites in the Cashel Palace Hotel Derby (Gr. 3) at Leopardstown. Los Angeles cleared in the stretch to lock in the victory.
However, will Los Angeles’ be speedy enough in the Derby? It’s questionable.

Nevertheless, it was a graceful defeat for Ancient Wisdom in 2nd, behind the winner Economics. Ancient Wisdom hasn’t finished worse than 3rd in his career. He’s 2nd, 1st, 1st, 3rd, and 1st in five performances!
The highlight of Ancient Wisdom’s career thus far was a strong trip in the 2023 Futurity Trophy Stakes (Gr. 1). He was timed at 1:46.45 in the mile event on the turf.
