Bayer Leverkusen – Vizekusen No Longer?

  • Manager: Xabi Alonso
  • UEFA Season Ranking: 3rd
  • Impact Players: Victor Boniface, Lukas Hradecky, Alejandro Grimaldo
  • Bundesliga 2023-24 Result: Champions

Bayer Leverkusen earned the nickname “Vizekusen” or “Neverkusen” in Germany for always finishing as the runner-up in the Bundesliga. After their incredible effort to break the curse and win the title, Bayer Leverkusen is one win away from going perfect through the league schedule and Europa League.

The cherry on top is that the team will also meet second-tier Kaiserslautern in the German Cup! Leverkusen is on the brink of history and Atalanta is the biggest hurdle left.

As a result of their fantastic campaign, Bayer Leverkusen ranks third in the UEFA club coefficients for 2023-24. Securing the title last month, Bayer Leverkusen set their focus on finishing the Europa League strong, where they boasted a perfect mark of 6-0-0 and 18 points in Group H, and then proceeded to beat strong opponents on the way to the final.

In the Bundesliga, Alonso’s squad was in obvious top form! They scored 87 goals as opposed to just 23 goals against for a whopping +64 goal differential. Bayer Leverkusen looks unstoppable, right? Atalanta might have something to say about that.

Atalanta – Peaking At The Right Moment?

  • Manager: Gian Piero Gasperini
  • UEFA Season Ranking: 6th
  • Impact Players: Teun Koopeiners, Charles De Ketelaera, Gianluca Scamacca
  • Serie A 2023-24 Result: 5th

Atalanta did not have the most picture-perfect season in 2024. They did enough to qualify for the expanded 36-club Champions League next season, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing.

La Dea posted a record of 19-6-10 with 63 points in Italy this season. That being said, Atalanta finished the season campaign in top form. They won their final four matches, including against Roma, 2-1, on May 12.

It was a big effort for Atalanta to give them a three-point edge over Roma in Serie A. Although team couldn’t knock off powerful Juventus in the Coppa Italia Final, they remained in strong form!

Atalanta won the possession battle 66% to 34% and had more shots, 13 to nine shot attempts. In their latest Europa League match, they buried Marseille in the semifinals for a 3-0 win to advance 4-1 on aggregate.

Despite finishing fifth in the Serie A table, Atalanta finished third offensively with 65 goals. They yielded 39 goals to finish with a strong goal differential of +26! Atalanta is in their best form of the season.

Their aggressive attack has the potential to cause issues for Bayer Leverkusen. Even Liverpool struggled to combat their aggressive system in a 3-0 loss at Anfield on April 11.

They generate plenty of quality scoring chances, and in a one-game final, it could give Atalanta the edge.

2024 Europa League Final Predictions and Betting Pick

While sports betting sites favor Bayer Leverkusen, there is a case to be made for Atalanta given their recent form. They are playing with a plethora of confidence at the right time.

Bayer Leverkusen has the talent advantage, though the same could have been said in Atalanta’s Liverpool match. When the Italian side is feeling confident, everything clicks on the pitch.

And, right now, Atalanta is clicking at all levels. At a minimum, I expect the underdog to draw to set up an epic conclusion at Aviva Stadium. Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen in penalty kicks to lift the trophy would be fitting for these two clubs.

With that in mind, consider backing Atalanta on the spread at +0.5. The Italians at plus money to draw or win is a top value bet at plus odds!

The Bet
Atalanta +0.5
