2023 CFL Grey Cup Odds and Predictions

110th CFL Grey Cup

On Sunday, November 19, 2023, the 110th CFL Grey Cup will kick off at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario. Before heading to the Steel City, we are analyzing the latest 2023 Grey Cup odds from the top football betting sites.

This past weekend, the Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers advanced to the 110th Grey Cup. There was a notable upset in the CFL East Division Final, as the Montreal Alouettes shocked the Toronto Argonauts as 10.5-point underdogs.

Before Saturday’s loss, the Argonauts were favored to win the Grey Cup since August. However, they are out of the playoffs after Argonauts’ QB Chad Kelly struggled to solve the Alouettes’ defense. In the CFL West Division Final, the Blue Bombers’ defense applied a stranglehold on BC Lions’ QB Vernon Adams in a 24-13 win.

Let’s dive into the latest Blue Bombers vs. Alouettes odds and share our 2023 Grey Cup prediction.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers-7.5 (-110)-330Over 46.5 (-110)
Montreal Alouettes+7.5 (-110)+270Under 46.5 (-110)

To open the 2023 CFL season, the Blue Bombers were atop the 2023 Grey Cup odds at BetUS. In June, the Blue and Gold had +250 odds to win the Grey Cup. Spearheaded by Kelly, the Argonauts caught fire to take over as the favorite in August.

Now, everything has come full circle for the Blue Bombers, as they are the -330 betting favorite with an implied probability of 76.6 percent to win the Grey Cup.

110th CFL Grey Cup Matchup

Let’s take a quick look at the 110th Grey Cup matchup between the Blue Bombers and Alouettes and how they landed in Hamilton.

Montreal Alouettes (+270)

The Alouettes did not land in the Grey Cup due to being a fantastic team. However, they played fantastic football when it mattered the most in the CFL East Division Final.

Following a mediocre record of 11-7 in the regular season, the Alouettes were handed a tough draw against the 16-2 Argonauts. Toronto’s 16 wins tied a CFL record held by Edmonton since 19891

Nevertheless, nine turnovers, four of which were Kelly interceptions, are too much for any team to overcome. Two of Kelly’s interceptions were returned touchdowns2. Kelly’s first pick-6 in the first half shocked the Argonauts, and they were never able to recover from the mishap.

With the defense in dominant form, the Alouettes’ QB Cody Fajardo was not required to do much. Fajardo passed for 175 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, as the defense took control of the game to pull away from the Argonauts.

The CFL is a QB-driven league, but Fajardo had a pedestrian season in his first year in Montreal. The former Saskatchewan Roughrider passed for 3,847 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 20233.

The 31-year-old Nevada alum must lean on his defense to have another standout performance. In the Division Semifinal, the Alouettes used the same blueprint for a 27-12 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

In the regular season, the Alouettes finished third, with 333.9 yards allowed per game. Additionally, they conceded the second-fewest points at 21.8 per game. The Blue Bombers are the only squad that has done better in this regard.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-330)

The Blue Bombers didn’t finish with the best record in the CFL. However, 14 wins and a defensive clinic in the West Division Final led the Blue Bombers to Hamilton for the 110th Grey Cup.

While the Alouettes rode their defense to the Grey Cup, the Blue Bombers did the same against the Lions. Adams, who passed for the most yards in the regular season, was stymied by an aggressive Blue Bombers’ defense.

Adams was contained for 221 yards passing, one touchdown, and three interceptions4. Like the Alouettes, the Blue Bombers’ defense forced the opposing QB into a myriad of mistakes. This isn’t anything new for the Blue Bombers.

Winnipeg finished first in yards and points allowed per game. They were the only team in the league to hold opponents under 300 yards of offense per game and an average of three touchdowns.

Blue Bombers’ QB Zach Collaros led the CFL in touchdowns. The 35-year-old CFL veteran passed for 4,252 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Collaros’ 112.8 QBR was the highest in the league at 112.85.

Not only did the Blue Bombers rely on their defense, but the offense has been one of the most dangerous in the CFL. Overall, the Blue Bombers led the league, with 417.3 yards per game. They were the only club to eclipse 400 yards per game this season6.

2023 Grey Cup Prediction

The Blue Bombers were the most well-rounded team in the regular season. Despite not finishing with the best record, statistically, the Blue Bombers had an edge over the rest of the league.

Also, you could argue that while the Argos’ Kelly received most of the attention from the media, Collaros was the best QB in the CFL. According to QBR, Collaros was indeed the best CFL signal caller.

Collaros’ 112.8 QBR surpassed Kelly’s 109.5 and Adams’ 105.5. He’s been well ahead of Fajardo. Collaros doesn’t need the defense as much as Fajardo to win games.

Fajardo’s 97.1 QBR was the sixth-best in the CFL amongst QBs that played in a minimum of 10 games. He led the Alouettes to 332.1 yards per game, which is sixth out of nine teams in the CFL.

The Alouettes were able to take advantage of mistakes by the Argonauts to reach the 110th Grey Cup. Can we expect Collaros to do the same at Tim Hortons Field? Likely not. Kelly had a tremendous regular season, but it was only his first year starting playoff games in the league.

Experience accounts for a lot at this time of the season, and it’s certainly what Collaros possesses. He’s played in the last two Grey Cup games, including a 33-25 win over the Tiger-Cats in 2021.

Last season, the Blue Bombers were denied a three-peat against the Argos in the Grey Cup after back-to-back titles in 2019 and 20217. In Hamilton, expect Collaros to direct the Blue Bombers back to the winner’s circle.

Fajardo will have to make plays this time and not simply manage the game. That approach is not a recipe for success against the Blue Bombers. Look for the pass rush to get to Fajardo, as the experience of Winnipeg’s defense proves to be too much.

We are backing the Blue Bombers to win and cover the point spread. For our 2023 CFL Grey Cup prediction, we are calling for a 28-16 win in favor of Winnipeg.
