2024 Hugo Awards Betting Odds and Predictions
The following Hugo Awards 2024 odds are courtesy of BetUS:
AWARD | FAVORITE | PREDICTION |
---|---|---|
Best Novel | John Scalzi — Starter Villain (+200) | Martha Wells — Witch King (+400) |
Best Fancast | Jonathan Strahan and Gary K. Wolfe — The Coode Street Podcast (+250) | Jonathan Strahan and Gary K. Wolfe — The Coode Street Podcast (+250) |
Best Graphic Story or Comic | Kelly Sue DeConnick — Wonder Women Historia: The Amazons (+250) | Kelly Sue DeConnick — Wonder Women Historia: The Amazons (+250) |
The betting prices for the Hugo Awards signal we will have a wide-open race for the top awards. John Scalzi’s novel Starter Villain (+200) is the shortest favorite on the board.
Scalzi only has a 33.3% implied probability of winning best novel for Starter Villain, so oddsmakers don’t see a clear runaway winner in any category. Similar to the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature odds, the top award is up for grabs.

2024 Hugo Awards Best Bets by Category
Now, let’s delve into my analysis and Hugo Awards predictions for each category available for wagering at online betting sites:
Best Novel Odds and Betting Pick
NOVEL | ODDS |
---|---|
John Scalzi — Starter Villain | +200 |
Shannon Chakraborty — The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi | +300 |
Emily Tesh — Some Desperate Glory | +350 |
Ann Leckie — Translation State | +400 |
Martha Wells — Witch King | +400 |
Vajra Chandrasekera — The Saint of Bright Doors | +600 |
Scalzi’s Starter Villain is the top favorite in a category packed with some mediocre work, and a couple of quality novels. The competition is stiff, but I don’t necessarily agree that Scalzi should be favored here.
He is a well-liked and popular author among sci-fi fans. The 55-year-old native of Fairfield, CA, has a strong social media following and is accessible at public events and festivals. Worldcon voters tend to vote for their favorites, so Scalzi is nominated and the betting favorite to win Best Novel!
The sci-fi writer won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2013 for Redshirts. Since then, he’s been nominated four times, including last year for The Kaiju Preservation Society. Like last year, Scalzi should come up short of a rival novel.
For the best betting value, consider backing Martha Wells’ Witch King. The easy-to-read novel centers around Kai, the Witch King, and his journey through an otherworldly society that includes demons, mortals, witches, and superbeings.
Kai is not a witch, but rather a demon prince of the underneath.
It’s an easy read for high school-aged students and engaging enough for older novel fans. Witch King has received mixed reviews since it was released in 2023. However, I suspect the accomplished Murderbot author will see plenty of support from the Worldcon voters.
In what is shaping up to be a competitive race, Wells’ Witch King is a solid wager to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel at +400 odds.
Best Fancast Odds and Betting Pick
FANCAST | ODDS |
---|---|
Jonathan Strahan and Gary K. Wolfe – The Coode Street | +250 |
Marshall Ryan Maresca – Worldbuilding for Masochi | +310 |
Steven Soderbergh – The Good, the Bad, and the Bloody | +350 |
John Coxon, Alison Scott, and Liz Batty – Octothrop | +380 |
Buma, Liu Lu, and Liu Chang – Science Fiction Fans | +460 |
Seth Heasley – Hugos There | +500 |
For our next 2024 Hugo Awards betting pick, I am analyzing the nominations in the Best Fancast category. This is a unique category honoring the best fan-made broadcast, typically a podcast, in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.
Although I don’t like the betting favorite in the Best Novel category, Jonathan Strahan and Gary K. Wolfe’s The Coode Street Podcast is the clear front-runner in the fancast category. Strahan and Wolfe are both accomplished editors and critics.
Currently, Dr. Wolfe is a Professor of Humanities at Roosevelt University’s Evelyn T. Stone College of Professional Studies. He’s won the Pilgrim Award, Distinguished Scholarship Award, Eaton Award, and British Science Fiction Association Award, among others!
Likewise, Strahan is an award-winning editor and book reviewer. The Coode Street Podcast is far more than just a critique and an inside look at sci-fi books from fans. Wolfe and Strahan are both accomplished and well-versed in the subject matter.
Sci-fi fans can learn a lot from simply listening to Wolfe and Strahan’s discourse. The Worldcon faithful likely views The Coode Street Podcast similarly, so I suggest a bet on this engaging podcast to win the Best Fancast honors.
Best Graphic Story or Comic Odds and Betting Pick
GRAPHIC STORY/COMIC | ODDS |
---|---|
Kelly Sue DeConnick – Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons | +250 |
Brian K. Vaughan – Saga 2 | +350 |
Can Jin – The Three Body Problem | +350 |
Deena Mohamed – Shubeik Lubeik | +360 |
Paul Cornell – The Witches of World War II | +360 |
Zach Weinersmith – Bea Wolf | +400 |
The Hugo Award in the Graphic Story or Comic is another competitive category. According to the latest Hugo Awards 2024 odds, Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons is the most likely winner.
The DC Comics’ Black Label publication is seeing plenty of love from the public. With terrific reviews from the public and critics alike, Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons is in the driver’s seat to win this award.
Based on a warrior queen named Hippolyta and her experience with the Amazons in an arcadia and turbulent society among the gods, the comic has been incredibly well-received.
Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons has a 4.8/5 rating on Amazon, 4.5/5 on Goodreads, and 97% of readers liked the comic on Google Books. If anything, artist Phil Jiminez’s work is outstanding enough to give this one a look.
The odds don’t give DeConnick’s work enough credit here. In my opinion, I have Wonder Woman History: The Amazons as a +150 favorite, so there is definite value in winning this category at +250!
