NBA Trade Deadline Recap (so far)
It has been a wild start to trade deadline week, so let’s have a look at what has happened so far.
Luka Dončić to the Lakers, Anthony Davis to the Mavericks
The NBA landscape was changed drastically overnight on February 2, when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. This might be the biggest trade in NBA history! The trade moved the lines at NBA betting sites for the Lakers, who are now fourth behind Boston, Oklahoma City, and Cleveland in the NBA Finals odds at +900. The Mavericks are priced at +2800 despite getting Davis, who is a force on both sides of the floor.
The Lakers also get Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, while Dallas also receives Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick. Utah was also involved, getting Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-round pick from the Lakers, and another 2025 second-rounder from the Mavericks.
There is a lot to digest from this trade, from LeBron James claiming not to know anything about it, to Doncic’s father ripping the Mavericks. But rest assured, the Lakers’ visit to Dallas on April 9 might be the most-watched NBA game of the season.
De’Aaron Fox to the Spurs, Zach Lavine to the Kings
This trade isn’t as big, but it’s still an important deal for the future of the league. De’Aaron Fox asked Sacramento to work on a trade to send him to San Antonio, and they obliged him.
Fox was sent to the Spurs, along with reserve guard Jordan McLaughlin. The Kings received Zach LaVine from Chicago, along with three-first round picks, and three second-round picks. The Bulls got a 2025 first-rounder, along with Zach Collins and Tre Jones from San Antonio, and Kevin Huerter from Sacramento.
Fox will now be paired with young phenom Victor Wembanyama, while the Kings get another All-Star player in LaVine, who played with Kings’ guard DeMar DeRozan in Chicago.
The NBA Finals odds didn’t move much for either team. But, especially for the Spurs, this is a move for the future as they look to take advantage of having “Wemby”, who may be an All-NBA player in his second season!

NBA Trade Predictions
Now, let’s dive into our NBA trade deadline predictions and make our NBA next team best bets:
Which Reporter Will Break the Jimmy Butler Trade News First?
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Shams Charania | -200 |
Chris Haynes | +300 |
Jake Fischer | +600 |
Evan Sidery | +1400 |
Marc Stein | +1400 |
Brian Windhorst | +2500 |
Jimmy Butler | +3300 |
Pat Riley | +10000 |
Stephen A. Smith | +10000 |
The Jimmy Butler next team odds are currently off the board at Bovada. The Golden State Warriors are out of the running after Butler told him he wouldn’t sign an extension there in the offseason. Memphis had also talked to Butler, who said the same thing to the Grizzlies.
It seems like the Phoenix Suns is the only place Butler wants to go, and they could sign him to an extension. However, Bradley Beal is in the way. His salary would have to be included in a trade with Miami, but he has a no-trade clause that he is unwilling to waive. The Suns have until Thursday, February 6, to make this work.
But who will break the news if it happens? I do like Chris Haynes at +300, but it has to be Shams Charania at -200! The ESPN insider is the heir to the throne left to him by Adrian Wojnarowski, and has slotted in seamlessly at the company. Don’t overthink it. Just wager on Charania to break any Jimmy Butler news.
LeBron James (If Not Lakers)
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Golden State Warriors | +300 |
Cleveland Cavaliers | +400 |
New York Knicks | +500 |
Chicago Bulls | +600 |
Philadelphia 76ers | +700 |
Miami Heat | +800 |
Orlando Magic | +1000 |
San Antonio Spurs | +1200 |
James has already said that he’ll stay with the Lakers past the trade deadline. However, what he says, and what could happen, are two fundamentally different things. I also believe that James will stay with the Lakers, where he gets to team up with Doncic, who is the evolution of James in terms of basketball skills and IQ (although, not athleticism).
The 40-year-old James loves living in Los Angeles, where he also has numerous business ventures, and his family is set up there.
But where would James go if he were to get traded? I think it’s just Golden State at +300, and the list ends there. Ever since teaming up with Stephen Curry to win the gold medal for the United States, people have been clamoring to send James to Golden State, or Curry to the Lakers. The Warriors also want to squeeze what they can out of Curry, who will be 37 in March.
Again, I think both stars stay where they are. After the Dončić-Davis trade, absolutely nothing is off the table, though. I’m tempted, but I’ll stay away from Golden State at +300 at online sportsbooks!
P.J. Tucker (If Not Jazz)
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Phoenix Suns | -145 |
Philadelphia 76ers | +325 |
Milwaukee Bucks | +325 |
Miami Heat | +375 |
Dallas Mavericks | +650 |
The Suns are favored at -145 to pick up Tucker, a 39-year-old who hasn’t played a game this season. He was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Jazz, and has played just 31 games for Philadelphia, and the Clippers. Is there even a market for Tucker, who doesn’t play much defense anymore, and only shoots corner threes?
But I’ll take the Suns at that price as Tucker is close with Suns’ star Kevin Durant, as they both played at Texas in college (Tucker left a year before Durant got there). The Suns, despite being over the second apron, they can sign Tucker to a minimum contract. I’ll call this, as Durant looking out for his friend.
Collin Sexton (If Not Jazz)
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Orlando Magic | +500 |
Milwaukee Bucks | +600 |
Los Angeles Lakers | +700 |
Miami Heat | +800 |
Detroit Pistons | +1200 |
San Antonio Spurs | +1400 |
Sexton is averaging 18.7 points for the Jazz, and if there is one thing he is good at, it’s scoring the basketball. All these teams could use him, and the Jazz are looking to tank for Duke’s Cooper Flagg, the consensus #1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. However, I don’t think Milwaukee at +600, and the Lakers at +700, have the assets for Sexton.
So, I’m leaning towards Orlando at +500 as they have the cap space to make it happen with relative ease. The Magic also need scoring as Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero can fill it up, but there isn’t much else on the roster. Sexton could fill that void.
Deandre Ayton (If Not Trail Blazers)
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Detroit Pistons | +400 |
Washington Wizards | +400 |
New Orleans Pelicans | +600 |
Milwaukee Bucks | +700 |
Chicago Bulls | +1000 |
Atlanta Hawks | +1000 |
Golden State Warriors | +1100 |
Charlotte Hornets | +1200 |
Ayton is toiling away in obscurity in Portland, where he is averaging 14.5 points and 10.1 rebounds, without looking all that engaged for a bad team. The 26-year-old is a talented player, no doubt, but his character and ambition are questionable. He also makes a lot of money at $34 million this season, and $35.5 million next season.
That makes Detroit an attractive destination at +400, and he would be better served going there with Cade Cunningham, the former #1 pick who is now an All-Star. Washington, also at +400, could work, but they’re right up against the first apron. Bringing Ayton in doesn’t help them much.
Jordan Poole (If Not Wizards)
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Detroit Pistons | +550 |
Orlando Magic | +600 |
Milwaukee Bucks | +800 |
Minnesota Timberwolves | +800 |
San Antonio Spurs | +1000 |
Denver Nuggets | +1100 |
Sacramento Kings | +1400 |
I’m not going to go with the favorites at offshore sportsbooks, which is again, Detroit at +500. The Wizards would love to get up off Poole’s contract, which has two years left at $31.8 million this season, and $34.0 million in 2026-27. The Wizards are also over the second apron, which limits what they can do in terms of moves.
If the Magic don’t go with Sexton, they might take a run at Poole, and Orlando is at +600 to trade for Poole. We’ve seen hum play well in the past, winning a title with Golden State. He won’t do much else other than score, but the Magic will allow him to do that as they are excellent defensively anyway.
Poole can come off the bench, even at that high salary, and shoot as much as he wants. Orlando is going to make a move before Thursday, I’m pretty confident, and scoring is the priority. Let’s also take them here at +600.
Julius Randle (If Not Timberwolves)
REPORTER | ODDS |
---|---|
Washington Wizards | +400 |
Brooklyn Nets | +500 |
Detroit Pistons | +900 |
New Orleans Pelicans | +1100 |
Utah Jazz | +1100 |
Miami Heat | +1400 |
Portland Trail Blazers | +1400 |
Houston Rockets | +1800 |
San Antonio Spurs | +1800 |
This is tough as the Timberwolves have one of the worst salary-cap situations in the league, if not the worst. They traded Karl-Anthony Towns for Randle to help out, but they still have less cap space than anyone in the league. Furthermore, Randle looks like an awful fit on the court for the Timberwolves.
Detroit at +900 could make it work, but Randle would be in the same situation he is in with Minnesota, where it’s Anthony Edwards’ team. I’m going to abstain from making a pick here as I think Randle stays, reluctantly, with the Timberwolves, and they try to work something out with him in the summer.
