The next England manager odds are now up, after Gareth Southgate resigned on July 16. He is leaving his post after an agonizing 2-1 loss to Spain in the final of EURO 2024.
It was a second straight final loss for England at the European Championships, as they were by defeated by Italy on penalties in 2021. Southgate also led the team to a quarterfinal loss to France at the 2022 World Cup, and a third place at the 2018 World Cup.
Southgate was capped 57 times for England as a player, and managed the team 102 times after taking over Sam Allardyce in September 2016. He had England on the path, but ultimately, his conservative style of play left much to be desired in big games.

These odds on England’s next manager reflect how the Three Lions have hired in the past. Of the 19 men who have managed England, 17 of them have been English. Italy’s Fabio Capello (2008-2012) and Sweden’s Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001-2006) are the only non-Englishmen to hold this job.
Six of the top ten in the England next manager odds are from England, all with varying degrees of previous managerial success. You could definitely argue that the four non-English candidates are much better than the Englishmen. However, based on the past, the FA will likely stick with a countryman to lead the team.

Here are the favorites in Bovada’s next England manager odds. The top three are all English. They include the main contender Graham Potter, who is currently unemployed, one manager on the hot seat at his club, and another who has been involved with the England setup since 2020.
Graham Potter (+150)
Potter has long been tipped for the England job an is available since he was sacked by Chelsea in April 2023. The former Brighton manager lasted just seven months at Stamford Bridge, although to be fair to Potter, he took over Chelsea at a tumultuous time. There was a new owner, and a new front office that didn’t seem to know what style of play (and players) they wanted.
Before that, the 49-year-old Potter had been excellent at Brighton. Even though he had a record of 42 wins, 47 losses and 46 draws in 135 games there, Brighton were ninth in the 2021-22 English Premier League, their best-ever finish in the EPL.
Potter was instrumental in the development of midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo. Coincidentally, Caicedo joined Chelsea for £115 million in August 2023, just four months after Potter was sacked.

Potter is a versatile manager who likes to play on the front foot and is influenced by Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager that is also included in these odds. He would be a major change from Southgate, who is more pragmatic in his tactics. It is a change that many England fans would like to see.
Lee Carsley (+330)
I was a bit surprised to see Carsley’s name this high in the odds for next England manager. The former Everton midfielder was a caretaker manager (the same as an interim manager) twice over 11 games in 2012-2013, then took over at Brentford for two months as a caretaker once again. Carsley then managed the England U-20 team from September 2020 to July 2021, when he was promoted to the U-21 team.
If England want to commit to the England DNA philosophy, upgrade tactically whilst maintaining the positive culture from the Southgate era, they should make Lee Carsley the senior manager.

However, Carsley’s familiarity with the England setup is likely why he’s so high in these England next manager odds. The 50-year-old knows the young players coming through the English system. The senior England team is already skewing younger, led by Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, and Kobbie Mainoo.
Furthermore, Carsley has something that even Southgate doesn’t have: a win in a major tournament with England. His U-21 team won the 2023 U-21 Euros, topping their group. England then beat Portugal and Israel in the knockout stage before a Curtis Jones goal gave the Three Lions a 1-0 win over, coincidentally, Spain.
Eddie Howe (+350)
Howe is the current manager at Newcastle, after he was appointed in November 2021. He led Newcastle to fourth place in 2022-23, which put them back in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
The next campaign was an up-and-down season for Newcastle, who ultimately finished in seventh place, outside the Champions League spots.
Before Newcastle, the 46-year-old Howe had two stints at Bournemouth, with a 19-month spell at Burnley in between. Like Potter, Howe is flexible and can play in several ways. He likes his team to press, which can leave them open at the back.

However, Newcastle scored 85 goals in the Premier League last season, their most ever. Alexander Isak scored 25 goals, and Howe was excellent with his usage of the striker. Newcastle needs reinforcements at the back to challenge for the top four. However, Howe might be England manager by then.
Top Sleepers for the England Job After Southgate
I see the following three managers as the most likely sleepers to get the England job.

This is probably the dream hire for many England fans. Klopp left Liverpool after nine successful years, winning the Premier League and the Champions League at Anfield. He said he wanted to take a break, but that didn’t stop the US men’s national team from approaching Klopp about their job opening. It was a good try, but Klopp rejected their offer.
Can England tempt the German? They should definitely try, since an appointment of such a caliber would instantly lift the nation, even after the EURO 2024 heartbreak.
The FA should back the money truck up to his house and force him to say yes. He knows England extremely well and can handle big stars with ease. However, it seems like Klopp is sticking to his guns about a break…..for now.

Pochettino left Chelsea after just one season, and while they got off to a poor start, they won their last five games of the Premier League season. However, there were numerous clashes with management, much like Potter experienced at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino is reportedly on the short list for the England Football Association, and for good reason. Before Chelsea, Pochettino was manager of Tottenham from May 2014 to November 2019, guiding them to the Champions League final in 2019, where they lost to Klopp’s Liverpool.
He also likes to play attractive soccer, which is something England fans are craving. Pochettino is also probably more realistic than Klopp at this particular moment.

Carrick is known from his time at Tottenham and Manchester United, spending 12 years with the latter. He played 34 times for England, and is well-respected in the country.
After hanging the soccer boots, Carrick was an assistant at Manchester United, before being named caretaker manager when Ole Gunnar Solskjær left the club in November 2021. Carrick also left the club in December 2021.
The former midfielder is now in charge at Middlesbrough, which is in the Championship (or the second-highest level of English soccer). It might be too much of an ask to hire Carrick for England, but I could see him being on the staff of the next manager. Surely, he’s a better option than other former players such as Frank Lampard (+2000), Steven Gerrard (+4000), or Wayne Rooney (+4500).
Next England Manager Prediction and Betting Pick
The names I’ve mentioned in these next England manager odds aren’t the only options out there. Of course, Guardiola (+2500) is up there, along with names like José Mourinho (+4000), Marcelo Bielsa, and Arsène Wenger (+6600). David Beckham (+10000) has also been mentioned in these odds.
However, all these exciting names are not very realistic, and you should stick with the most likely candidates.
I’m going to stay chalk and pick Graham Potter at +150 as my next England manager betting pick. He ticks all the boxes for an England manager, and the Football Association wouldn’t have to pay out a club as Potter isn’t working right now.
He would be a great change from Southgate, and I think his style would do great in international soccer.
