Favorites in the Next Manager at Manchester United Odds

Let’s check out the favorites to take over the manager’s position at Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (+200)

United fans are very familiar with van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 219 games between 2001 and 2006 before heading to Real Madrid. The Dutchman has moved through the managerial ranks, starting with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, as well as helping out with his national team.

There are some who think this was the initial succession plan, even though United extended ten Hag before this season. However, there is a concern that van Nistelrooy doesn’t have enough first-team experience. He did lead PSV Eindhoven to second in the Dutch league in 2022-23, but left with one game remaining in the season, as van Nistelrooy didn’t feel supported by the club.

We also just watched United hire ten Hag, who came from Ajax, who topped the Dutch league and obviously struggled in Manchester. Is van Nistelrooy a better coach than his compatriot? We’ll see over this interim basis.

Gareth Southgate (+350)

Southgate stepped down as the England manager after almost eight years with the national team. In that time, Southgate took England to two straight Euro finals, losing to Italy in 2020 (2021, due to the pandemic), and Spain in 2024.

Southgate, who played with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough from 1988 to 2006, plays a more pragmatic style that would turn many United fans off. But you can’t deny what he did with the England team, despite not winning a tournament.

The 54-year-old would also become the first English manager at Manchester United in 38 years. Ron Atkinson was fired in November 1986 for Sir Alex Ferguson, which spawned the most dominant period in United’s history. Given that some are not happy with Southgate’s England replacement, Thomas Tuchel, being German, that might actually matter.

Xavi Hernandez (+350)

The former Barcelona great managed Al Sadd in the Saudi League from May 2019 to November 2021, when he took over at his beloved Barça. Hernandez led Barça to the La Liga title in 2022-2023, but after some bad results, he said he would leave at the end of the 2023-2024 campaign. He changed his mind, but Hernandez was let go in May 2024 anyway.

It could be a coincidence that Hernandez’s wife posted the above photo of Xavi playing with his son, who is wearing a Manchester United jersey. It is also been reported that United has already contacted Hernandez.

The 44-year-old is a prime candidate to succeed ten Hag at Manchester United, and he would bring a similar style to what Manchester City play on the other side of the city. Xavi was coached by City manager Pep Guardiola at Barça. Hernandez basically replaced Guardiola in the Barça side as a player. It would be very fascinating to see what Hernandez could do at United.

Julian Nagelsmann (+700)

Nagelsmann won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich after the 2021-2022 season, and recently led Germany to a quarterfinal finish at Euro 2024 as they lost to the eventual champions from Spain in extra time. It was a return to form for Germany, which puts Nagelsmann near the top of the Manchester United next manager odds at Bovada.

The 37-year-old German is known as an excellent tactician, and Tuchel is a big fan of Nagelsmann, who played under Tuchel. Before Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann took Red Bull Leipzig to the Champions League semifinals in 2020, where they lost to Tuchel’s Paris Saint-Germain team.

Nagelsmann was also replaced by Tuchel at Bayern Munich. However, it might be costly to get Germany to allow their manager to leave, especially given how well they played at Euro 2024.

Ruben Amorim (+700)

Amorim has been in charge of Sporting Lisbon in Portugal since March 2020. The club has won two Primeira Liga titles, and Amorim took then to the quarterfinals of the Europa League two years ago.

The 39-year-old was reportedly on United’s list in the summer, and Manchester City are also looking at him as a successor to Guardiola. Liverpool was also considering Amorim to replace Jurgen Klopp, before going with Arne Slot in the summer. The Portuguese manager plays an entertaining style of soccer at Sporting, who have won all nine league games this season with 30 goals scored, and only two conceded.

Money might be an issue, as it would likely cost United a lot to pry Amorim away in midseason. The new minority owners of the club, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, have been diligent about cutting costs at United.

However, The Athletic reports that United are already working on a deal to bring Amorim to Old Trafford.

Sleepers in the Next Manchester United Manager Betting Odds

Next, let’s take a look at some betting value down the board at Bovada in this market.

Kieran McKenna (+1800)

McKenna managed the United Under-18 team for two years, then earned a spot on the first-team staff. But McKenna was then tapped up by Ipswich Town in December 2021 to manage their team, and he led them to the Premier League for the first time since 2002.

Ipswich Town is in the relegation zone at the end of October, but his team also isn’t very talented. People believe he would do better with a more talented squad, but the 38-year-old may need a little more seasoning before taking on a club of United’s stature.

Zinedine Zidane (+2200)

This is a pipe dream for most United fans, but Zidane’s odds to be the next manager of Manchester United hold some impressive value!

Of course, Zidane barely requires an introduction. “Zizou” is one of the greatest players of all time, winning everything as a player with Juventus and Real Madrid. He also won the World Cup with France in 1998, and finished runner-up in 2006, although he’ll be best remembered for his headbutt on Italy’s Marco Materazzi that got Zidane sent off late in the final.

Zidane went on to manage Real Madrid twice, winning La Liga on two occastions, and the Champions League four times, including three times as the head manager. United has been sniffing around Zidane for years, and will do so again.

However, former France teammate Thierry Henry believes Zidane wants to manage France, and will hold out until then. Current France manager Didier Deschamps, who also played with Zidane, is under contract with the national team until after the 2026 World Cup.

Next Manchester United Manager Betting Pick

United probably waited too long to terminate ten Hag’s employment, and are in a tough spot right now. Tuchel was the favorite before deciding to take the England job. But I’m recommending a wager on Ruben Amorim at +700!

It might be a matter of United thinking he is good enough for City and Liverpool, and are willing to give him a shot. United know they have to move fast as they sit 14th in the Premier League as of October 28, and they can’t afford to fall much further in the table.

Also, Amorim’s betting odds as the next Manchester United manager are as good as they’re going to get, so you would do well to jump on them immediately to get as much value as you can!
