Naturally, the American women’s soccer team is the favorite for taking the gold medal here. The current Olympic gold holders, Canada, are seemingly out of the equation with numerous top-notch teams ready to rise up for the occasion. According to the latest Olympic women’s soccer betting odds, Canada is the 8th best name on the team sheet.

Spain and France are more likely to challenge the Americans, but you never know in the Olympics. Before we analyze the top teams, let’s discuss the format first.

2024 Paris Olympic Games Women’s Soccer Tournament Key Info

Before placing your Olympic women’s soccer betting picks, you should know how the tournament works. Here’s a summary of the format:

  • The first set of matches are scheduled for Thursday, July 25th, with the final set for August 10th.
  • The Paris 2024 women’s soccer tournament will feature 12 teams divided into 3 groups of four in stage one.
  • The first phase of the tournament is the group stage, where the top 2 teams + the two best 3rd place teams progress to the knockouts.
  • The eight teams proceed to face each other in a single-elimination bracket until a winner is determined.

As you can see, going through the group stage should be easy for all favorites, but it’s sudden death after that. A single poor game could be enough to go home.

Favorites for Paris 2024 Women’s Soccer Tournament

Spain, the current world champion, is right next to Team USA at the top of the list. How come is the US women’s team ranked among the favorites considering their abysmal World Cup performance?

Let’s talk about!

Team USA (+170)

The USWNT had a disastrous World Cup. They got eliminated in the Ro16 by Sweden on penalties, which you could see coming after very poor performances in the group stage.

The USA defeated Vietnam 3:0, but that’s setting the bar too low. Then they went on to draw Portugal and the Netherlands… and Sweden, if we’re counting that Ro16 clash too. Team US looked slow, sluggish, and almost arrogant at times.

My explanation is the lack of hunger. After winning so many trophies over the last decade or so, the Americans kind of expected from the opposition to roll over and gift them another title.

The problem might be solved, though, as the team is coming off a fantastic title-winning campaigns on the Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup. The side’s recent form has been much better, and it looks like the US have rediscovered their mojo just in time for the Olympics.

The talent is there, so with their confidence back too, the Americans will be once again the team to beat.

Spain (+200)

Is Spain really the best team in the world right now? Well, their recent performances definitely imply that. They won the World Cup and the inaugural season of Nations League this February.

However, not everything is rainbows and butterflies for Tome’s Spain. They just lost 2:1 to Czechia and have shown everyone they’re far from unbeatable. Other teams are bound to analyze the footage and set up their gameplans accordingly.

Spain shouldn’t have any major trouble in the group stage, though. They’re in group C with Japan, Nigeria, and Brazil. Anything but a top two spot will be a huge surprise. But, once the knockout stage begins, Spain will be challenged.

The team is very good, so a strong run is on the cards. The big question here is whether they can beat the USA and France.

France (+500)

The hosts usually do well on home soil. Perhaps they don’t always go all the way, but we’ve seen quite a few upsets over the years. France isn’t just the host nation, but also one of the main gold contenders, despite not winning a single trophy yet.

They were so close to winning the inaugural season of the UEFA Women’s Nations League but were stopped by Spain in the final.

Even though +500 on France might seem like an awesome deal, I’d advise against it. While the French women’s team does have quality players (and they’re currently ranked as the second-best team in the world), they lack the experience to win the Olympic gold.

France regularly delivers deep runs that end when they meet the best teams in the world. I expect more of the same in Paris 2024, so I wouldn’t back the hosts for the gold medal.

Best Paris 2024 Women’s Soccer Sleepers

USA, Spain and the hosts France are the top contenders for Olympic gold in Paris 2024, but there are two more countries I’d like to point out as formidable opponents: the reigning Olympic champions Canada and Australia. Let’s take a closer look!

  1. Unfortunately, Australia won’t be able to count on Sam Kerr due to her ACL injury. This will definitely hinder their chances at going all the way. However, Australians have more than enough solid players to compensate. The likes of Foord and Fowler are bound to step up for the occasion.

The Australian team went all the way to the World Cup semifinals with Sam Kerr barely playing, so they’ve already shown us they can do well without her. It will be interesting to see how they square off against the US, Germany, and Zambia in group B, but Australia will be very tough to beat in the eliminations.

  2. Finally, let’s talk a bit about Canada! Beverly Priestman’s team is the current Olympic gold title holder. However, they’re going to be in an uphill struggle all tournament long. They’re in group A with France, Colombia, and New Zealand.

They shouldn’t have issues qualifying for the knockout stage, but then what? Can this team repeat the heroics from the previous Olympics?

Canada has a proper snowballing potential, especially if they can continue playing the same way they did against Jamaica in the Olympics’ qualifiers. This Canadian team could turn into a dark horse, even if they end up losing a game or two in the group stage.

Getting +2000 for the defending champs is solid value, so you should consider Canada.

2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Soccer Prediction and Betting Pick

The USA and Spain are at least a level above anyone else in the tournament. The gold medal will very likely go to one of these nations.

On one end, Hayes’ players have plenty of depth and have enjoyed title-winning campaigns on the Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup.

On the other end,  we have the Spaniards who haven’t just won the World Cup but also the Nations League this February. They’ll surely be looking to add to the success the men’s team has had on this year’s EURO.

And yet, I feel like Team USA have more depth and will be playing with a chip on their shoulders. That extra motivation to prove to the world they are still the best is why I prefer backing the main favorite here at +170.
