2024 Olympic Women’s Handball Odds: Can France Win Gold on Home Soil?

2024 Olympic Women’s Handball Odds: Can France Win Gold on Home Soil?

The Olympic women’s handball odds for the upcoming tournament in Paris have a familiar country at the top of the list. France, the host, is favored to win another gold medal as the defending champions. The Olympic men’s handball odds also have the hosts as the favorite, but by a smaller margin.

However, there are a couple countries that could push France, notably Norway and Denmark. There is some value out there for handball bettors.

Read on to find the most recent odds, and I’ll analyze the teams’ chances on the way to picking a 2024 Olympic women’s handball gold medalist!

TEAMODDS
France-135
Norway+175
Denmark+600
Netherlands+1100
Sweden+1400
Germany+2500
Spain+10000
Hungary+10000
Brazil+10000
Slovenia+10000

The women’s handball Olympic odds have France (-135) as a sizeable favorite, with an implied probability of 57.4% to win. The country is a juggernaut in the women’s handball world, winning gold in 2020 in Tokyo, and they swept through the World Championships in 2023. They’ll definitely want to win on home soil.

Next is Norway (+600), where there is an implied probability of 36.3% to win the tournament. The Danes (+600) come in with a 14.3% chance to win the gold medal. Like the Olympic women’s handball betting odds, I’m not giving the other countries much of a chance against the top three.

Favorites for Paris Olympics Women’s Handball Event

The 2024 Olympic women’s handball betting odds have France and Norway as large favorites, with Denmark hanging around.

Let’s take a look at the top three teams with hopes of winning gold in Paris this summer. They’re the most likely to help their countries move up the Olympic medal table odds.

France (-135)

France lost to Russia 22-19 in the 2016 gold-medal game in Brazil but got their revenge against the Russians with a 30-25 victory in Tokyo in 2020. Les Bleues also swept through the 2023 World Championships with a perfect 9-0-0 record, although they finished a disappointing 4th at the European Championships in 2022.

The French will be led by captain Estelle Nze Minko, who has scored a staggering 397 goals in 169 appearances for her country. Nze Minko also made the World Championship All-Star team from her left-back position. She was joined on the All-Star team by goalkeeper Laura Glauser and left-win Chloe Valentini.

Head coach Olivier Krumbolz managed the team from 1998 to 2013 and returned in 2016. He has a solid group of veterans that can help the young players. Pivot Pauletta Foppa is only 23, but she has 183 goals in 72 games for France. 21-year-old Lena Grandveau also burst onto the world stage, scoring four goals in the World Championship final against Norway.

This sense of continuity, with a mix of youth and experience, is why France are the big favorites, according to the 2024 women’s handball Olympics odds. They can also rely on the home support.

However, at this price, are they worth a selection? I’ll reveal my pick at the end of this article.

Denmark (+600)

The Danes are back in the Olympics after failing to qualify for the last two editions. However, they finished third at the 2023 World Championships, which Denmark co-hosted with Sweden and Norway. They lost in the final to Norway by a close 27-25 score.

Left back Kristina Jorgensen finished third in goals at the World Championship, scoring 47 goals on 74 shots. The 26-year-old will be counted on for another big tournament, while Jorgensen is joined by fellow left back and club teammate, Anne Mette Hansen.

The 29-year-old has scored a whopping 465 goals in 161 appearances for her country. Meanwhile, head coach Jesper Jensen has led the team since 2020.

If you’re looking for a longshot, the Danes would be an excellent pick at the top online sportsbooks.

More Contenders for the Medals

These teams will need the 2024 Olympic women’s handball betting favorites to struggle to get to the medal games. Let’s check out the contenders who will try to threaten the top three in France this summer.

  1. The Dutch finished fifth at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. They’ve fallen off a little bit as the Oranje Dames finished in the top three of the World Championships from 2015, 2017 and 2019, winning it all five years ago. However, they’ve finished sixth at the last two Euros, then ninth and fifth at the past two World Championships.

They’ll need big tournaments from their veterans, Laura van der Heijden, Lois Abbingh, Estavana Polman and Angela Malestein. There isn’t much youth throughout the team, so the vets must step up and lead the way. They did draw some luck, though. The Netherlands is in Group B with France, but they’re better than the other teams in the group.

  2. On the other hand, Sweden drew the short end of the stick as they’re in a tough Group A with Norway, Denmark, and Germany. They were trounced 36-19 by Norway in the 2020 bronze-medal game. Sweden then finished fifth at the 2022 Euros, and fourth at the 2023 Worlds, where they were co-hosts.

Right-winger Nathalie Hagman will get a lot of attention from opposing defenses. She scored 43 goals at the 2022 Euros, and has scored 818 goals in 221 appearances for her country. Left back Jamina Roberts, the 2022 and 2023 Swedish Female Handballer of the Year, will have to also contribute for the Swedes.

  3. Germany should have enough to claim a spot in the knockout round, but that’s probably it for them. The Germans are back in the Olympics for the first time since 2008. They came up just short of the knockout rounds at the 2022 Euros and lost to Holland in the fifth-place game of the 2023 World Championships.

Center back Alina Grijseels scored 44 goals at the Euros and will be important for the Germans. Left back Emily Bolk can also score in buckets. However, the rest of the field is just too strong for Germany to compete for medals, and in the online sports betting lines.

2024 Women’s Olympic Handball Predictions and Betting Pick

It all comes down to the top three in my Olympic women’s handball predictions. France, Norway, and Denmark are head and shoulders above the rest of the countries. It would be a shock if the gold medallists came from outside the top three.

If you want some value, lay a small bet on Denmark. Norway is also more than capable of winning the gold in Paris.

However, I’m going chalk and sticking with the hosts. France has the best women’s handball team in the world since 2020, despite their fourth-place finish at the 2022 Worlds. They have a versatile team full of players that have been here before, and France would love to win gold on home soil.

I expect the French women’s team to hold up their end and win gold as the country tries to repeat their double from 2020, when they won gold in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
