PWHL 2025 Championship Odds: Is the Walter Cup Heading to Montreal?

Montreal Victoire (+270)

The Montreal Victoire leads the league with an overall record of 14-4-1 and 39 points. They also lead the PWHL in wins in regulation with 10 this season. It’s important to note that Montreal have done this while playing fewer games than any other team.

Montreal has won 14 games in 19 matchups, while Toronto has needed 21 games to capture 32 points. Additionally, the Victoire are the only team in the PWHL to allow fewer than 50 goals this season. Montreal also holds the best goal differential at +11.

They sport the best blue line with 43 goals against, for an average of 2.26 allowed per game. Ann-Renee Desbiens has been fantastic between the pipes for Montreal. She holds a 1.76 GAA and 0.934 save percentage through 14 games to lead the PWHL.

The veteran leadership spearheaded by Marie-Philip Poulin gives Montreal a huge lift in the locker room and on the ice. Last season Poulin tied for second in the PWHL, with 23 points, including 10 goals and 13 assists through 21 games! She is once again causing noise, with 12 goals and five assists in 19 games, good enough for fifth in the league.

This is the most well-balanced team in the PWHL and a dangerous threat to win the Walter Cup!

Toronto Sceptres (+310)

The Toronto Spectres top the regular season in points last year, led by star forward Natalie Spooner. Unfortunately, she suffered an ACL injury in the spring to hold her out for the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

She returned to the lineup recently and has played in five games for the Sceptres. It’s clear, though, that Spooner needs more time to get back up to game speed. Bouncing back from an ACL injury at 34 years old isn’t the simplest chore.

Spooner has recorded one assist in five games. She’s still searching for her first goal. If Toronto wants a strong push in the postseason, they’ll need Spooner close to her best. The Team Canada star ranked third in the PWHL in points a season ago, so her impact is invaluable.

If the Sceptres have a fully healthy and in form Spooner for the playoffs, they’ll have a great chance, though. Despite Spooner’s absence, Toronto is second in the PWHL at 10-7-4 and 32 points. Her return is instrumental, but the defense has to step up.

Currently, the Sceptres have a goal differential of +0, with 55 goals allowed and 55 scored. Between Spectres’ goaltenders Raygan Kirk and Kristen Campbell, Toronto is fifth and sixth in GAA. Spooner and Hannah Miller together make for a potent attack, but there are questions left to be answered in Toronto.

Boston Fleet (+370)

The Boston Fleet are holding strong with 31 points in 20 games this season. They own a record of 11-6-3 which puts them on track for a playoff berth. Boston has a +5 goal differential, with 51 goals and 46 goals against in 2024-25.

The Fleet have leaned heavily on Team USA star Hilary Knight this season. Knight has notched 17 points with eight goals and nine assists. She is sixth in the PWHL following 20 games played.

Knight needs some help on the Fleet, though, and other players must step up for this team to go all the way in 2025. Alina Muller is the next closest Fleet player and is 16th in the league in points. As a comparison, Montreal has four players in the top 20 in points.

While Boston lacks consistent offensive pop, they are covered in the crease with Aerin Franklin between the pipes. She is second in the league, posting a 1.95 GAA and 0.931 save percentage. Only Montreal’s Desbiens has been better.

Franklin will have to steal a series in the playoffs for Boston to reach the final round. It’s possible, but I don’t have as much confidence in the Fleet as Toronto and Montreal.

Minnesota Frost (+380)

The Frost are in the mix for the final playoff spot and going back-to-back as champions of the PWHL! They’re one point behind the Fleet while having played one fewer game. With 10 games remaining this season, the Frost own a record of 10-7-3 and 29 points overall.

Minnesota is well-balanced with four players in the top 20 in points! If you look at the Frost’s offensive numbers, you’d believe they’d be ahead of the Fleet at this point. Kendall Coyne Schofield is having a tremendous season, as she’s scored eight goals and 10 assists in 20 matchups.

She ranks third in the PWHL in points, trailing only Sarah Fillier and Miller. Team USA’s Taylor Heise is having a fine campaign as well. The forward is ninth in the league in points and a welcome contributor at forward. Although the Frost have had some solid individual results, the wins aren’t piling up yet.

Minnesota has a goal differential of +0. They’ve tallied 57 goals, which is tops in the PWHL, but have conceded 57 goals as well. The offense is holding this team together right now. If the defense can get their act together, the Frost are one of the best units in the league.

However, as they are right now, I’m not optimistic about the Frost repeating as Walter Cup champs. Goaltending and defense are paramount in the playoffs. Currently, the Frost’s PWHL 2025 odds indicate a 20.8% chance to win. I have them closer to 15%, so there isn’t any value here.
