The Matrix 5 Odds and Predictions – Can The Matrix Bounce Back?

The Matrix franchise has been nominated for, and won, numerous awards. However, in terms of the Academy Awards, it has won four, and they all came at the 72^nd Oscars in 2000. The original Matrix swept the categories it was nominated in, including Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Consider that no Matrix film has even been nominated for anything since then, not even for Best Visual Effects. The Matrix raised the bar of how visual effects could be used to push a story along. This highway chase scene from The Matrix: Reloaded, is the stuff of legends:

But I think Best Visual Effects is the only Matrix 5 odds you should be considering. The original wasn’t nominated for Best Picture, and that was easily the best movie of the franchise.

The first Matrix has a rating of 83% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The Matrix: Reloaded has a critic rating of 63%, The Matrix: Revolutions is rated 73% by the critics, and The Matrix: Resurrections has a critic score of 34% (although 60% from the audience).

We can scratch Best Picture off the options, and Best Original Screenplay is likely gone as well. Goddard has been involved in some good projects, such as Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods, and The Martian.

He was even nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 88^th Academy Awards for The Martian, but it lost to The Big Short.

Your best bet in these Matrix 5 betting odds would be Best Visual Effects, because if there is one thing that The Matrix is going to do, is bring some great visuals to the big screen. The odds are high enough as well, so a small wager on this one makes sense.

The Matrix 5 betting market for the film’s worldwide gross after six months is equal on both sides, over or under $200 million. Let’s compare that to previous movies first.

The original had a worldwide box office of $466 million, while Reloaded almost doubled that at $742 million. Revolutions took a big dip back down to $427 million. The most recent, Resurrections, was released in December 2021, and flopped. On a budget of $190 million, Resurrections brought in just $159 million worldwide.

I’m leaning towards the under here, but just slightly. It all depends on how the early reviews look for The Matrix 5. If the reviews are decent to good, that will encourage more people to go out to the theaters to see it.

The third and fourth films have scared off many people who were all in on The Matrix, so it needs to have good early reviews to break the $200 million barrier. I’m going to recommend the under here.

There are Matrix 5 betting markets for Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss to return as Neo and Trinity, respectively. However, both are valued by Bovada at -1200 to reprise their roles, and I think The Matrix 5 doesn’t happen if Reeves and Moss aren’t involved.

However, Hugo Weaving wasn’t in Resurrections due to a scheduling conflict. Weaving’s Agent Smith was the perfect foil to Reeves’ Neo, and it was strange not seeing him in the film as Smith (although he did via archival footage).

Weaving is a fantastic theater actor, which is why he missed out on Resurrections. The role of Agent Smith was filled by Jonathan Groff, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, whose character was a combination of Smith and Morpheus, Neo’s mentor.

I’m going to go with No at -135 for Weaving showing up for The Matrix 5 (archival footage doesn’t count). Early reports reveal that Goddard might be rebooting the franchise altogether, but that could also change. Reeves and Moss will be there, but one of my Matrix 5 betting predictions at online sportsbooks is that we won’t see Weaving, unfortunately.

Laurence Fishburne wasn’t in Resurrections to reprise his role as Morpheus, claiming that he wasn’t invited back for the fourth film. It’s probably just as well, given his middling thoughts on the movie.

But Fishburne is fine in terms of his career. He reunited with Reeves in the three most recent entries in the John Wick franchise.

Fishburne also has a few projects in the pipeline that he is working on, so I’m going to go with No to him appearing in The Matrix 5. He could be in the movie via archival footage, but it seems like a bridge has been burned between Fishburne and Lana Wachowski. It’s a shame because the Neo/Morpheus relationship was a staple of the first three movies.
