Brendson Ribeiro (+125) vs. Mingyang Zhang (-145)
Road to UFC winner, light heavyweight Mingyang Zhang (16-6-0), will make his long-awaited UFC debut on the UFC 298 card.
Brendson Ribeiro (15-5-0) is here thanks to an impressive performance versus Bruno Lopes on Dana White’s Contender Series: Season 7 in September. The 27-year-old Brazilian has won three straight matches via KO/TKO in Round 1.
That said, the 25-year-old Zhang is currently on a path of destruction. After a few blemishes as a raw 18 and 19-year-old, Zhang has won nine straight bouts in the opening round. Two wins were by submission, and seven wins by KO/TKO.
Expect Ribeiro to wobble and land on his back due to a strong Zhang connection. In 2022, Ribeiro showcased a weak chin in losses to Bruno Rodrigues and David Barkhudaryan.
Zhang ends this fight before going to the judge’s scorecards.
Andrea Lee (+157) vs. Miranda Maverick (-182)
35-year-old Andrea Lee (13-8-0) is in desperate need of a win at UFC 298. With three consecutive losses on her resume, Lee has no more room for losses.
Dana White will likely be quick to release Lee if she suffers four straight defeats. Unfortunately, for Lee, this appears like a mismatch against Miranda Maverick (14-5-0).
Despite Lee being ranked higher, Maverick’s ground game should prevail. Lee needs to stay on her feet to try and catch Maverick, but the 26-year-old native of Missouri likely does succeed in taking the fight to the mat for a win.
Val Woodburn (+235) vs. Oban Elliott (-275)
On July 8, 2023, 30-year-old Jamaican Val Woodburn (7-1-0) made his debut on short notice against Bo Nickal. “The Animal” didn’t look the part, as Nickal ended the fight in 38 seconds.
Following seven straight wins in Combat Night, Woodburn didn’t handle the jump to UFC well. With a full training camp to prepare for Oban Elliott (9-2-0), expect a better effort from Woodburn.
Nevertheless, Woodburn’s seven wins have all been against inferior regional fighters. Elliott isn’t a top welterweight prospect, but he is certainly more battle-tested than Woodburn.
With a reach advantage, Elliott should pick on Woodburn to score well on the scoresheets. We have Elliott winning via unanimous decision.
Josh Quinlan (+168) vs. Danny Barlow (-193)
Originally scheduled to take on Yusuka Kinoshita, Danny Barlow (7-0-0) will face Josh Quinlan (6-1-0) at UFC 298. Quinlan is coming off the first loss of his career against Trey Waters on the April 29 edition of UFC Fight Night.
This was after a Round 1 KO of Jason Witt in his UFC debut a year earlier. However, Witt is a doormat and vulnerable with his weak chin. Despite a victory in the first round, it isn’t a signature win for Quinlan by any stretch.
Barlow is coming swinging at Quinlan with a wicked left. The 28-year-old southpaw has the potential to end this fight at any point in the bout.
On the heels of three straight KO/TKO wins in Round 1, he is likely to do the same against Quinland. It may stretch into the second frame, but Barlow has Knockout of the Night potential versus Quinlan.
Mackenzie Dern (+112) vs. Amanda Lemos (-132)
In what would be a much-needed boost to both women’s careers, 30-year-old Mackenzie Dern (13-4-0) challenges 36-year-old veteran Amanda Lemos (13-3-1) at the Honda Center.
The UFC 298 odds lean to Lemos at -132, though she is not a favorite if this fight goes to the mat. Can Lemos stay upright and wear down Dern? In August, at UFC 292, Lemos looked vulnerable on the ground in a decision loss to Zhang Weili.
If Dern gets Lemos on her back, she will be the favorite in live betting markets. Otherwise, Lemos can win standing up. We will bet that Dern ties Lemos up on the ground to win as a slight underdog.
In a matchup that could equally be a dominant win for either woman, side with Dern’s odds at +112.
Justin Tafa (+120) vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima (-140)
30-year-old Justin Tafa (7-3-0) and 38-year-old Marcos Rogerio de Lima (21-10-1) square off in a battle of heavyweights at UFC 298. Rogerio de Lima is coming off a quick loss to Derrick Lewis in 32 seconds at UFC 291 in July.
Despite typically having solid defensive skills, de Lima got caught out of position early versus Lewis. Tafa has the potential to tag de Lima. That said, if de Lima survives the early onslaught from Tafa, this bout sets up well for him.
Following an early defeat against Lewis, we should expect Rogerio de Lima to have his guard up. After getting through the opening round, Rogerio de Lima should control the pace en route to a victory.
Paulo Costa (+185) vs. Robert Whittaker (-220)
In the co-main event, 33-year-old Robert Whittaker (25-7-0) has an implied probability of 68.8 percent to defeat the challenger, 32-year-old Paulo Costa (14-2-0).
Costa has backed out of this fight in the past, so we’ll see if he shows up to fight Whittaker. If the fight takes place, Costa will have a puncher’s chance. However, Whittaker is one of the most balanced middleweights in the UFC.
If Costa can’t catch Whittaker’s chin, he will find it difficult to win. Whittaker can beat Costa with a variety of tools. Costa will make this one entertaining, but Whittaker prevails to get back in the win column.
Ilia Topuria (+100) vs. Alexander Volkanovski (-120)
35-year-old Alexander Volkanovski (26-3-0) is looking to disrupt a long-standing UFC trend against 27-year-old Ilia Topuria (14-0-0) in the main event of UFC 298.
In the UFC’s 31 years of existence, 35-year-old fighters in lower weight classes have gone in 2-21 at 170 pounds and lighter. Additionally, they are 1-21 in title fights versus younger opponents1.
What might be even more concerning is Volkanovski’s loss against Islam Makhachev. Losing to Makhachev via a vicious kick to the head only four months ago has to be slightly concerning to his camp.
That may have taken something out of Volkanovski, both physically and mentally. A young and motivated Topuria isn’t the fighter Volanovski wants to see after a physical loss.
The 5-foot-6 Aussie remains the class of the featherweight division, but “The Great” has to be prepared to hand the torch to a younger fighter soon. The hungry and dangerous Spaniard could be the one.
