Australian Open Women’s Final: Sabalenka vs. Zheng

Sabalenka returns to the Australian Open women’s final with a chance for back-to-back titles in Melbourne.

The native of Minsk, Belarus, is not an unexpected Women’s Australian Open finalist. She was afforded an incredibly generous draw, with no serious roadblocks in front of the No. 2 ranked player on the WTA Tour.

Elsewhere, No. 1 ranked Iga Świątek suffered a shocking upset to 19-year-old Linda Noskova. After winning the first set, Świątek appeared rattled and was never able to get into a rhythm. While that was happening, Sabalenka was rolling over her competition on the other side of the draw.

The 2023 Australian Open winner hasn’t dropped a set through her six matches. Incredibly, she was close to sweeping without losing a point in two matches. Sabalenak defeated Ella Seidel in her first-round match, 6-0, 6-1.

Following a second-round win over Brenda Fruhvirtova, 6-3, 6-2, Sabalenka set her sights on Lesia Tsurenko. In a complete clinic, the Belarusian stomped Tsurenko for a 6-0, 6-0 victory. She followed up with 6-3, 6-2, wins over Amanda Anisimova and Barbora Krejčíková to reach the semifinals.

2023 U.S. Open winner Coco Gauff had Sabalenka on the ropes, but Sabalenka fought back for a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win1. Gauff was the first serious threat that Sabalenka had to face at the Australian Open, and she had to battle to secure the victory.

Sabalenka has to win one more match to claim the 2024 Australian Open women’s title. It will have to come versus a rising star in Zheng. The 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year is likely just getting started, and a sign of things to come in the future for the Australian Open finalist.

Zheng was fairly dominant during her road to the Australian Open women’s final. However, unlike Sabalenka, she needed a third and decisive set to finish off her opponents in three matches. When Zheng has been on her game, though, she’s been just as tough as Sabalenka.

In the fourth round, Zheng dispatched Oceane Dodin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Also, she was dominant against Katie Boulter for a 6-3, 6-3, win in the earlier rounds. Lastly, Zheng ousted Dayana Yastremska in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-42.

Qinwen Zheng

Australian Open Women’s Final Prediction

Sabalenka is a heavy favorite to defeat Zheng to win a consecutive Australian Open title as well as the second Grand Slam of her career. However, it may be trickier than the Australian Open women’s odds imply.

Zheng didn’t win the 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year award for no reason. Her spot in the final of a Grand Slam was anticipated by many tennis pundits. Perhaps not this quickly, but Zheng possesses the necessary tools to beat any woman on the WTA Tour.

Sabalenka likely wins this match, but there isn’t betting value at -550 odds. The point spread for this match appears to be slightly inflated. Regardless of the winner, the final score should stay within 5.5 points.

Gauff might have taken just enough out of Sabalenka to cause her to think twice against Zheng. The crafty player out of Shiyan, China should give Sabalenka a solid challenge in the Australian Open final.

Expect Sabalenka to prevail at Rod Laver Arena. But, covering the spread should prove to be difficult. Back Zheng to be competitive to cover +5.5 points.

The Bet
Qinwen Zheng +5.5

Women’s Australian Open Final Prop Bets

Check out the best 2024 Women’s Australian Open Final prop bets courtesy of Bovada:

Will Aryna Sabalenka Win At Least One Set?

WIN A SETODDS
Yes-1600
No+750

While we foresee Zheng hanging tough with Sabalenka, it’s highly improbable that the No. 2 women’s player in the world isn’t winning a set.

Zheng has a puncher’s chance to win the Australian Open women’s title, but she isn’t doing it in straight sets. Sabalenka wins a minimum of one set, and she likely wins two sets to beat Zheng.

Despite having to lay -1600 odds, it’s difficult to see any scenario where Zheng beats Sabalenka in straight sets. Sabalenka will certainly win at least one set in the Australian Open women’s final.

The Bet
Sabalenka Wins At Least One Set

Will Qinweng Zheng Win At Least One Set?

WIN A SETODDS

No-150

As thrilling as it would be to see Zheng win a set to force a third, Sabalenka’s experience should be too much for her. Despite -5.5 being too many points, Sabalenka can still win in straight sets.

We are expecting Sabalenka to beat Zheng by four points in two sets. With that in mind, a 6-4, 6-4, win for Sabalenka, and cover for Zheng is our best 2024 Women’s Australian Open final prediction.

Zheng Doesn’t Win At Least One Set

Sabalenka has won 6-0 in three sets at the 2024 Australian Open. However, Seidel and Tsurenko are not in as great of form as Zheng is right now.

Zheng would have to enter the final match unfocused and unprepared to lose a set by six points. With nothing to lose for Zheng, it’s more likely that Sabalenka is the one feeling more pressure and nerves.

No, we won’t see any set to nil at the Australian Open women’s final.

Women’s Australian Open 2023

At the 2023 Women’s Australian Open, Sabalenka defeated Rybakina to notch the first Grand Slam of her career. Despite losing the first set, Sabalenka fought back to take the second and third sets for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.

Similar to this year, Sabalenka had the second-shortest Australian Open odds to win the tournament. At +700, there was much better value on Sabalenka to win in 2023, though. Świątek had identical odds to win the Australian Open as she does this year.

In 2023, our tennis betting got off to a red-hot start, with Sabalenka picked to win. We closed out the Grand Slam calendar with another big victory on Coco Gauff winning the 2023 U.S. Open. Let’s have another profitable year, beginning with the 2024 Australian Open.
