Texas Longhorns vs. Washington Huskies Pick – Alamo Bowl December 29, 2022

The Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies are due up in the Alamo Bowl on Thursday night. In a sea of terrible bowl games so far this season, this one has the makings of an entertaining contest in Texas. We have our Texas vs. Washington predictions and Alamo Bowl best bets for Thursday night.

Texas is looking to continue building up momentum for a potential run next season. The Longhorns are coming off back-to-back wins against Kansas, 55-14, and Baylor, 38-27. They are winners in three of their last four attempts. An 8-4 regular season is not what they envisioned, but Texas is playing better football as of late.

Longhorns fans will also be able to look back on a 49-0 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry. That was a clinic from Texas against their rivals. That said, next season is going to be a failure if all they have to show for their effort is the Alamo Bowl.

The 2024 season could be the final year that the Longhorns are in the Big 12. They are planning on joining the SEC for the 2025 campaign. The one positive to see from this move is that Texas can re-ignite its rivalry against the Aggies in the SEC.

Washington was pleased to hear that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is returning to the Huskies in 2024. Penix Jr. has played a big role in helping lead the Huskies to a 10-2 season in 2022. The Huskies are on fire with six straight wins entering the Alamo Bowl on Thursday.

Texas vs. Washington Predictions

For Texas to reach the next level, it is going to take Quinn Ewers reaching his full potential. The highly recruited quarterback out of high school has not played up to expectations. He has in flashes, but the Longhorns are waiting for him to consistently look like a top-5 NFL pick.

In fact, Ewers has disappointed more than impressed this season. If he can put everything together next season, Texas is going to be in a good position, though. Fortunately, Ewers has shown a better grasp of the offense recently.

He will have to be in good form in this one with Michael Penix Jr. dealing on the other side. The Washington signal-caller has been one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country this season. Penix Jr. should put a lot of strain on the Longhorns’ defense.

The Penix Jr. Show At The Alamo Bowl?

The former Indiana Hoosier has passed for 4,354 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions on 66% completions. Penix Jr. has this Huskies’ offense zinging the ball around the yard. The Huskies lead college football with an average of 376.7 passing yards per game.

Overall, Washington is the second-best offense in the FBS in yardage per game. They have recorded an average of 521.7 yards per game. The points have followed with this unit, as well.

The Huskies are fourth in college with 40.8 points per game. They take care of the football and have the fourth fewest turnovers this season.

Texas has left the backdoor open in the secondary this season. Having conceded 239 passing yards per game, the Longhorns are 88th against the pass. Penix Jr. should do damage in the Alamo Bowl.

Quinn Ewers Responds In A Duel?

The pressure is on Ewers to play well and extend his good form into next season. Arch Manning committed to Texas, so Ewers is going to have company. Using a redshirt on Manning makes sense, but if Ewers is struggling, and Manning looks too good, that may not be the case.

Ewers enters the Alamo Bowl with 14 touchdowns and 6 interceptions on 56.6% completions. At times he impresses, but has a tendency to overthrow his receivers in other instances. Ewers must find get into a groove going into next year.

Expect him to have a capable performance versus the Huskies. Washington is 90th in the FBS with 241.8 passing yards allowed per game. The offense protects the ball, but the Huskies have not been forcing turnovers. They are only 104th in the FBS in this regard.

Texas vs. Washington Betting Pick:

The Longhorns will need to take to the air in this game. Dynamic running back, Dijan Robinson, is passing on the Alamo Bowl to prepare for the NFL. Washington has stood up well against the run, so this game falls on the shoulders of Ewers.

Against a beatable secondary, this is a solid opportunity for Ewers to go into the offseason with confidence. He should be able to pull it off as the focal point of the offense with Robinson absent. Do not discard the ability of Penix Jr. on Thursday night, though.

TheSportsGeek expects a shootout to open up at the Alamo Bowl in the second-half. Look for a 41-38 final score, with an Alamo Bowl best bet on the OVER.
