The XFL & USFL Merger
The UFL is new to 2024 and is the result of a merger between the XFL and United States Football League (USFL).
XFL, owned by Vince McMahon, launched the same year as the COVID-19 pandemic and endured a failed first season. A relaunch in 2023 attracted just 1.4 million TV viewers for its Championship Game.
The USFL lasted just two seasons, with the Birmingham Stallions winning both championships. Interest was just as low as for the XFL. As a result, in November 2023, the two leagues merged to create the UFL. Eight teams will complete in the inaugural 2024 season, which kicks off March 30. The league is split into USFL and XFL Conferences, with a four-team postseason to follow.
Types Of UFL Bets
Many bettors are experts in pro football wagering, but the UFL is a totally new ball game. It’s a totally new league with new teams and new players. The types of bets may be the same as the NFL, but there are different areas to consider when placing them. Here are the types of UFL bets you can make this season:
Moneyline
UFL moneyline betting is the most straightforward wager you can make and is a good first bet to make until you become accustomed to the new league. Moneyline bets are essentially bets on the outcome of the event and, most commonly, who you think will win. Moneyline is considered the safest betting strategy for new players.
UFL Moneyline Example:
Let’s say the Birmingham Stallions are favored at -200 in their weekend game with the Michigan Panthers. Michigan are the underdogs at +250. With these odds, a $200 bet on Birmingham is needed to win $100 profit. Meanwhile, if you bet $100 on the Panthers and they win, you’d claim $250 profit.
Spread
Point spread betting is big in pro football and UFL sportsbooks are also offering extensive lines. It’s all about betting on the amount of points a team will win or lose by.
UFL Spread Bet Example:
The idea of spread betting is to bet on a team to underachieve or out-perform expectations. Your sportsbook will set a line it thinks reflects the difference between the two teams. For example, it might price San Antonio Brahmas at +7.5 against the DC Defenders. If you bet on San Antonio here, you’re wagering that they will win by eight points or more.
Parlays
Parlay bets are the best way to squeeze value from your UFL bets by combining selections into one mega wager. Each individual bet has to win in order for the parlay to pay out.
UFL Parlay Example:
You plan to wager on all four UFL games in one weekend, but none of the moneyline odds are big enough to be worth the risk. So, you back the favorites on all four games in one big parlay. By building this type of parlay you greatly increase your win potential without needing to bet more. If all four picks win, you win the entire wager.
Props
Prop bets in pro football are wagers that have nothing to do with the game outcome but can still be wagered on. These range from the half-time score to who will throw the first touchdown.
UFL Prop Bets Example:
You explore the UFL odds in your chosen sportsbook and bet on the Showboats’ QB to throw the most points in a head-to-head with the Battlehawks QB. It doesn’t matter about the game result, all that counts is how many points your man gets!
UFL Futures Bets
UFL futures betting focuses around who will win the UFL Championship Game, who will be MVP, and which teams will top each of the two divisions. These futures bets often have higher odds than match bets because there’s no guarantee what might happen months down the road.
UFL Futures Bets Example:
You wager on Arlington Renegades to win the first UFL season at odds of +600. Team’s odds drop when they make the playoffs, but your price is already locked in. That’s the big perk about futures bets.
Expert Tip: If you’re new to UFL betting then we suggest you stick with moneyline and simple props to start. There are a lot of games to bet on over the UFL season, so we recommend not rushing into bets. Your betting technique and knowledge of the league will improve game-over-game.
Guide To UFL Live Betting
Live betting on the UFL gets you closer to the action than ever before. You can time your bets to perfection and take advantage of odds changes to lock in the best price. For example, you could wager on Memphis to beat DC by +7.5 when down seven points, at far better odds than at the start of the game. Or, bet on the point after touchdown, a unique new rule for the UFL!
-
UFL uses the standard pro football rules, but it’s also a testing ground for the NFL. Two big changes will be kickoffs from a different yard line and three point options after touchdowns – none of which involve a kicker. We suggest reading the UFL rulebook before placing your bet.

We recommend reading our guide to how betting odds work, so you’re ready to bet when the time comes. Odds can get complicated, especially around spreads, and there are three odds types to choose from.

Is UFL Betting Different From NFL Betting?
Sportsbooks generally offer the same betting options for the UFL as are available in the NFL. There are a couple of minor differences, but the one big change is where the spread is set. Here are answers to some of your most commonly asked questions about the differences between the two pro-football leagues.
Is there a difference between UFL & NFL?
Yes. UFL is a new league with some new rules, such as point options after touchdowns. The UFL only features eight teams, with a playoffs bracket that begins at the last-four stage.
Is the UFL field bigger than NFL?
The UFL field will likely be the same size as the NFL, with the following dimensions: 100 yards-long and 53.3 yards-wide.
What are the UFL overtime rules?
UFL overtime rules give both teams three plays from the two-yard line. Teams get two points for each successful score. Whichever team has more points after their respective three plays wins.
Do any NFL players play UFL?
Yes. Many NFL players are signed to UFL teams this season. These include Amari Rodgers (Birmingham Stallions), Corey Coleman (Michigan Panthers), and Cody Latimer (San Antonio Brahmas).
What is the 4 and 15 rule in the UFL?
The 4 and 15 rule gives teams an option to run one offensive play from their 25-yard line instead of kicking off after scoring in the fourth quarter. The team has one play to gain 15 yards and retain possession.
Does the clock stop in the UFL?
The clock only stops in UFL after the two-minute warning in each half. It stops when a player strays out of bounds or there’s an incompletion.
A Brief History Of The UFL
The UFL is a new league created by the XFL and USFL’s merger in the fall of 2023. Both the XFL and USFL had tried, unsuccessfully, to launch rival pro football leagues to be play once the Super Bowl hype ended. However, the TV viewership was low. This resulted in the two organizations coming together to launch a new 40-game regular season, with a three-game postseason.
UFL Timeline
-
We’re still waiting for the UFL to formally release its rulebook ahead of the inaugural season. It’s expected that the overtime shootout format and double-forward passes will remain part of the game.
-
Fox announces the new league will be called the United Football League (UFL) after the merger is formally ratified. “From day one, our mission has been to expand the game of football and be a league of opportunity, culture and innovation,” says Dwayne Johnson.
-
The XFL and USFL announce their intention to merge and create a new, combined league of eight teams. “This historic combination will anchor professional spring football with substantial capabilities and resources to ensure future growth and continue to enhance the development of the collective players, coaches, and staff that are coming together,” the two groups said. A trademark application for “National Spring Football League” creates hype around “NSFL”.
-
The second USFL season kicks off during Week 9 of the XFL regular season. Only 170,000 viewers watched the Houston Gamblers take on the New Orleans Breakers in Week 2.
-
The second XFL season kicks off with 1.57 million TV viewers watching the Arlington Renegades beat Vegas Vipers 22-20. Organizers hope the game, which takes place a week after the Super Bowl, will attract NFL fans.
-
The USFL launches its inaugural season in a bubble format, with eight teams playing 40 regular-season games in a bubble in Birmingham, Alabama. Crowds are infamously low for games not featuring the Birmingham Stallions.
-
The XFL’s long-awaited debut season is canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the company files for bankruptcy. In October, Dany Garcia and Dwayne Johnson buy the company.
